# Demography and Migration

## The Transition Every Society Has Run

For most of human history, births and deaths were both high and population stayed flat. Then society by society, a predictable four-stage **Demographic Transition** unfolded in a strict order:

| Stage | Births | Deaths | Population |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **1. Pre-transition** | High | High | Flat, brutal fluctuations |
| **2. Mortality drop** | High | Falling | **Explodes** |
| **3. Fertility drop** | Falling | Low | Growth decelerates |
| **4. Post-transition** | Low | Low | Flat at a higher level |

**The lag is everything.** Deaths fall first due to sanitation and food, while births keep going because social habits adjust slowly. That gap between the curves **is** the population explosion. Every population boom is simply Stage 2, and every Stage 2 eventually ends as fertility drops worldwide.

## Why Births Fall & Migration Realities

**Fertility decline** is driven by the shifting **value of a child**: child mortality falls, schooling replaces child labor, urban living makes kids expensive, and women gain education and options.

Migration is governed by two crucial overlooked factors:
- **Networks:** People migrate to where someone they know is, creating lumpy, chain-migration flows to known places rather than optimal ones.
- **The middle move:** The poorest rarely migrate because leaving is costly. Development initially **increases** emigration by giving people the funds to move.

Most migration is short-range, circular, and repeated rather than massive one-way permanent resettlement.

## Practice questions

8 of this lesson's 11 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. A famine kills a large share of a population and within two decades the numbers have recovered. What demographic mechanism does that reveal?

A. Miscounting, since pre-modern population figures are unreliable
B. Immigration from neighbouring regions replacing the dead
C. A fall in the death rate caused by reduced competition for food
D. Density relief: survivors gain land and marry earlier

**Answer:** D. Density relief: survivors gain land and marry earlier

**Why:** Vacant holdings pull marriage earlier and earlier marriage raises completed fertility, so the population rebounds toward the ceiling that caused the crisis. It is the Malthusian system's most counter-intuitive property, the catastrophe is self-correcting demographically and changes nothing structurally, which is why the post-Black-Death wage rise eventually eroded.

### 2. Sort each factor: **push** or **pull**?

**Answer:**

- Push: Famine in the home region, Religious persecution, War and conscription
- Pull: Higher wages at the destination, Available land to settle, A cousin with a spare room and a foreman who hires

**Why:** A serviceable frame, as long as you remember the last item is doing far more work than the wage differential above it.

### 3. Pre-industrial rural populations were far more mobile than the image of the settled peasant suggests.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** True. Parish reconstitution shows high turnover, life-cycle service, apprenticeship, seasonal labour and marriage migration moved a large share of every generation. The immobile peasant is largely a nineteenth-century construct, and correcting it changed how historians read everything from dialect to disease.

### 4. In a pre-transition society with high child mortality, roughly how many births were needed for three children to reach adulthood?

**Answer:** 6 births (within ±1)

**Why:** About six. Which is exactly why the number falls when child mortality does: the target was never six children, it was three survivors, and the fertility was the price of the mortality.

### 5. In the demographic transition deaths fall before births do. Why does that ORDERING, rather than the fall itself, produce the population explosion?

A. Because falling mortality directly causes higher fertility
B. Because the explosion happens only after both rates have fallen
C. Because births continue at the old rate while more survive
D. Because migration compensates for the difference in every case

**Answer:** C. Because births continue at the old rate while more survive

**Why:** Stage 2 is a lag, not a level. Both rates end low, and the population is permanently larger because of what happened in between, which is why the transition is described as a sequence.

### 6. Put the stages of the demographic transition in order.

**Answer:**

1. High births, high deaths, flat population
2. Deaths fall while births stay high, population explodes
3. Births begin to fall; growth decelerates
4. Low births, low deaths, flat population at a far higher level

**Why:** The order is the argument. Deaths fall first, always, and the interval before births follow is the entire population history of the modern world.

### 7. What actually drives fertility decline?

A. The invention and distribution of contraceptive technology
B. Children becoming expensive through schooling and the end of child labour
C. Falling child mortality, you no longer need six to keep three
D. Women’s education and options

**Answer:** B. Children becoming expensive through schooling and the end of child labour; C. Falling child mortality, you no longer need six to keep three; D. Women’s education and options

**Why:** All about the value of a child. Contraceptive technology usually arrives _after_ the decline is under way, a fact fatal to a great many confident theories about it.

### 8. Rapid population growth in a developing region reflects a durable cultural trait.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** It is stage 2, and stage 2 ends. Europe produced identical alarms during its own nineteenth-century explosion; Iran then ran the fastest fertility decline in recorded history. A transition is not a trait.
