# From Herodotus to Ranke

## Inquiry Gets a Name

The Greek word **historia** means **inquiry**. Herodotus is the father of history because he went and asked, collecting accounts and describing customs.

Thucydides narrowed the aperture: contemporary events only, eyewitnesses cross-examined, and **strictly human causation** driven by power, fear, and interest.

| | **Herodotus** | **Thucydides** |
|---|---|---|
| **Scope** | Wide: customs, geography | Narrow: politics, military |
| **Sources** | Informants, variants | Eyewitnesses cross-examined |
| **Causation** | Gods hover | Strictly human |
| **Pitfall** | Credulity | Narrowness |

Sima Qian's **Shiji** and **Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddimah** proved European narratives ignore advanced non-Western historiography.

## Ranke and the Professional Discipline

Leopold von Ranke built modern history with three moves: **primary sources over chronicles**, **source criticism**, and **the seminar** to train apprentices.

His goal was **wie es eigentlich gewesen**—showing how it essentially was. This produced two ironies:

1. **The theological pivot**: **eigentlich** means essentially, rooted in Ranke's belief that each epoch relates directly to God.
2. **The archival bias**: State archives yield state histories, erasing peasants, women, and the colonized.

> **The method encodes a politics.** Following only the documents means following power. Every methodological rule silently determines who is visible.

## Practice questions

5 of this lesson's 11 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Thucydides admits his speeches give what he thought the situation demanded rather than what was said. Why is that admission treated as a mark of rigour?

A. Because reconstructed speeches are more accurate than verbatim ones
B. Because he had shorthand records and chose not to use them
C. Because he states his method instead of passing it off as record
D. Because the speeches are marginal to his argument

**Answer:** C. Because he states his method instead of passing it off as record

**Why:** Declaring the method is the rigour. Reconstruction was unavoidable without recording; presenting it as transcription would have been the failure.

### 2. Thucydides composed speeches for his characters saying what the situation demanded, and called his work a possession for all time. Why is that not simply fabrication?

A. Because the speeches were reconstructed from eyewitness notes
B. Because he states the method and his standard differed from ours
C. Because he only invented speeches for minor figures
D. Because ancient readers understood speeches as decorative and ignored them

**Answer:** B. Because he states the method and his standard differed from ours

**Why:** He announces the practice in Book I, which makes it a declared convention rather than a deception, and judging it by a nineteenth-century documentary standard is anachronism. Watching evidentiary norms change from Herodotus to Ranke is most of what historiography studies.

### 3. What did Ranke contribute to the professionalization of history?

A. The first statistical method for measuring social change
B. Systematic source criticism: authenticity, authorship, date, dependency
C. Insistence on primary archival sources over recycled chronicles
D. The research seminar as the training mechanism for historians

**Answer:** B. Systematic source criticism: authenticity, authorship, date, dependency; C. Insistence on primary archival sources over recycled chronicles; D. The research seminar as the training mechanism for historians

**Why:** Archives, criticism, and the seminar, every history PhD alive is procedurally his descendant. Quantitative social measurement is an Annales-era and later contribution.

### 4. Order these historiographical landmarks.

**Answer:**

1. Herodotus inquires into the Greek–Persian wars (~440 BCE)
2. Thucydides narrows history to contemporary events (~400 BCE)
3. Sima Qian completes the Shiji (~94 BCE)
4. Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah sets out a science of society (1377)
5. Ranke’s archival seminar founds the modern discipline (1820s–30s)

**Why:** Two Greeks, a Chinese court archivist, a North African theorist, and a Prussian professor. The standard textbook sprints from the second to the fifth, and calls a provincial tradition "the history of history".

### 5. Herodotus preserves accounts he personally doubts; Thucydides confines himself to what he can cross-examine. What is the trade-off between the two methods?

A. Herodotus wrote for entertainment and Thucydides for instruction
B. Herodotus preserves what rigour would discard, and conversely
C. Thucydides covers a longer period, which explains the difference in method
D. Herodotus was simply less careful and there is no trade-off

**Answer:** B. Herodotus preserves what rigour would discard, and conversely

**Why:** Breadth against reliability. Herodotus' scruple in flagging his doubts is what makes the preserved material usable, and much of what we know about the wider ancient world survives only because he kept it.
