# The Americas: Mesoamerica and the Andes

## Civilization With the Wrong Toolkit

American civilizations built pyramids, cities, and empires without the Eurasia-centric checklist. They had **no draft animals** heavier than a llama, **no useful wheel** (the Maya left wheels on children's toys), **no iron**, and in the Andes, **no writing** in the usual sense.

This proves these technologies are not prerequisites, but one region's path. Two independent zones grew without knowing each other:

| Region | Key Features |
| --- | --- |
| **Mesoamerica** | Ran on **maize**, the calendar, and the ballgame |
| **The Andes** | Solved a vertical world of coast, highlands, and rainforest |

Mesoamerica's relay: **Olmec** (mother culture, colossal heads), **Maya** (only fully developed **writing**, astronomy, place-value calendar with zero), **Teotihuacan** (planned city of 125,000), and **Aztec** (tribute empire run from Tenochtitlan).

## The Andean Solution and the Fall

The Andes ran from **Chavín** to the **Inca**, whose empire was the pre-Columbian Americas' largest. It ran without a market or money, using **labour tax and state storehouses**.

The Inca administered a 4,000-km empire of ten million people with no writing, using the **khipu**—a system of knotted cords encoding numbers and data via colour, position, and knots.

Popular lore credits steel, horses, and guns for the collapse, but the **overwhelming cause was disease**. Old World herds seeded crowd diseases (smallpox, measles, influenza) creating resistance. The Americas had no herd animals and no acquired immunity:

$$\text{no herd animals} \rightarrow \text{no crowd diseases} \rightarrow \text{no immunity} \rightarrow \text{catastrophe on contact}$$

On the order of **90%** of the population died within a century, mostly _ahead_ of conquerors. Cortés and Pizarro walked into demographic collapse.

## Practice questions

9 of this lesson's 13 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. How did the Inca economy work without money or markets?

A. On a silver currency minted by the state
B. On free markets in every provincial town
C. On labour tax and state storehouses
D. On barter between fully independent villages

**Answer:** C. On labour tax and state storehouses

**Why:** Subjects owed labour, not cash; the state stored and redistributed the product. An economy of obligation and storehouses ran a continental empire, proof that "market plus money" is one solution to distribution, not the only one.

### 2. Inca administration ran an empire of ten million people with no writing as Eurasia understood it. What does that force us to separate?

A. Record-keeping from writing: a census run without a script
B. Literacy from education, since Inca officials were trained without texts
C. Empire from administration, since the Inca state was less centralised than it appears
D. Nothing; the khipu was a form of writing and the distinction is semantic

**Answer:** A. Record-keeping from writing: a census run without a script

**Why:** A census and a labour roster need quantities and categories, and knotted cord supplied both, so the checklist item 'writing' was standing in for a capacity it is not identical with. Whether narrative khipu existed is still open; the administrative ones demonstrably worked.

### 3. The Maya independently developed both a full writing system and the concept of zero.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** They did both, the only fully developed script in the pre-Columbian Americas and a place-value calendar that needed, and invented, a zero. Zero was discovered at least twice in human history, on two continents that never met.

### 4. Complete the causal chain behind the collapse.

**Answer:** The Americas had almost no **herd** animals to domesticate, so no reservoir of crowd **diseases**, so no acquired **immunity** — and on contact, roughly 90% of the population died.

**Why:** The whole catastrophe traces to a shortage of domesticable herd animals, no animals, no crowd diseases, no immunity. The conquest was, above all, a biological event.

### 5. Sort each civilization: **Mesoamerica** or **the Andes**?

**Answer:**

- Mesoamerica: Olmec, Maya, Aztec
- The Andes: Chavín, Inca, Khipu record-keeping

**Why:** Two cradles that never knew of each other, each solving civilization from scratch: maize and the calendar in the north, the vertical world and the khipu in the south.

### 6. What is the deepest lesson of the American civilizations for how we define "civilization"?

A. Civilizations cannot arise without iron and the wheel
B. The Eurasian checklist describes one path, not a law
C. Writing is a necessary condition for any large state
D. Only market economies can sustain empires

**Answer:** B. The Eurasian checklist describes one path, not a law

**Why:** Pyramids without iron, empires without the wheel, censuses without script, distribution without markets. Every supposed prerequisite turns out to be one region’s solution mistaken for a law of nature.

### 7. Within a century of contact, roughly what percentage of the Americas’ population died, mostly of disease? **Set the slider.**

**Answer:** 90 (within ±8)

**Why:** On the order of 90%. Whatever the exact figure, and it is genuinely debated, the scale makes the conquest first a biological catastrophe and only second a military one.

### 8. The American civilizations built cities and empires while lacking which "standard" technologies?

A. Any form of monumental architecture
B. Heavy draft animals and functional wheeled transport
C. Iron metallurgy
D. A full writing system, in the Andean case

**Answer:** B. Heavy draft animals and functional wheeled transport; C. Iron metallurgy; D. A full writing system, in the Andean case

**Why:** No iron, no draft animals, and, in the Andes, no script, yet pyramids, planned cities, and a 4,000-km empire all the same. Which retires the idea that these are prerequisites rather than one region’s particular path.

### 9. What was the khipu, and why does it matter?

A. A Maya calendar stone recording astronomical cycles
B. A tribute list carved on Aztec temple walls
C. An Andean irrigation technique for terraced fields
D. Knotted cords that ran an empire's records without writing

**Answer:** D. Knotted cords that ran an empire's records without writing

**Why:** The khipu ran the census, tribute, and storehouses of a 4,000-km empire on knotted cords, a standing rebuke to the assumption that record-keeping requires writing. We increasingly suspect it encoded more than numbers.
