## Space Becomes a Rule

Around 1413, Brunelleschi demonstrated **linear perspective**: a geometry, not a style, where all receding lines (**orthogonals**) converge on a single **vanishing point** on the **horizon line** at eye level.

$$\text{apparent size} \propto \frac{1}{\text{distance}}$$

Objects shrink by fixed ratio, making the painting a **window**: a slice through the cone of vision from one fixed observer. Medieval art ordered space by importance (bigger equals holier); Renaissance art orders it by geometry from a human standpoint.

| Medieval Space | Renaissance Space |
| --- | --- |
| Size means holiness | Size means distance |
| Space serves meaning | Space serves the viewer |
| Flat or symbolic | Ruled geometric illusion |

## Production and The Label

Nobody painted for self-expression. Art was commissioned under strict economic and institutional structures.

| Institution | Function |
| --- | --- |
| **Workshop (_bottega_)** | Master and apprentices; a commercial firm |
| **Guild** | Regulated quality, training, and prices |
| **Contract** | Fixed size, deadlines, and exact pigment grades |

Ultramarine from lapis lazuli cost more than gold; contracts specified its weight, dictating the Virgin's blue robe.

**Pitfall:** The term **"Renaissance"** (_rinascita_) is a historical claim, not a neutral fact. Invented to claim antiquity was "reborn" after a "dark" middle ages, it ignores continuous medieval scholarship, Islamic preservation, and earlier renaissances.

## Practice questions

7 of this lesson's 11 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Which conditions shaped how Renaissance art was actually produced?

A. Workshops with masters and apprentices operating as firms
B. Contracts specifying size, deadline, and pigment grade
C. Guilds regulating training, quality, and prices
D. Artists painting speculatively for the open gallery market

**Answer:** A. Workshops with masters and apprentices operating as firms; B. Contracts specifying size, deadline, and pigment grade; C. Guilds regulating training, quality, and prices

**Why:** Workshop, guild, contract, a commissioned economy. The speculative gallery market, and the lone artist producing for it, arrives centuries later with Dutch panel painting and then modernity.

### 2. Brunelleschi demonstrated perspective around 1420; Alberti wrote it down as a procedure in 1435. Why does the second event matter as much as the first?

A. Because Alberti’s construction was correct and Brunelleschi’s was not
B. Because a written procedure can be learned by anyone
C. Because no other artists witnessed Brunelleschi’s demonstration
D. Because perspective was not used in painting until Alberti described it

**Answer:** B. Because a written procedure can be learned by anyone

**Why:** Invention and diffusion are different problems. The panel showed it could be done; the treatise made it teachable, and that is what turned a trick into a period style.

### 3. Match each perspective term to its definition.

**Answer:**

- Vanishing point → Where all orthogonals converge
- Horizon line → The level of the viewer’s eye
- Orthogonal → A line receding from the viewer
- Picture plane → The window the cone of vision is sliced by

**Why:** Four terms and you can construct, or dismantle, any Renaissance painting’s space.

### 4. Order these Renaissance milestones.

**Answer:**

1. Giotto restores weight and human emotion (~1305)
2. Brunelleschi’s perspective demonstration (~1413)
3. Brunelleschi’s dome rises over Florence (1420–36)
4. Alberti codifies perspective in Della pittura (1435)
5. Leonardo perfects sfumato (~1500)

**Why:** Feeling, then geometry, then engineering, then a textbook, then the dissolving of the very outlines geometry made possible. Two centuries, and the Western picture is rebuilt from the eye outward.

### 5. Sort each spatial convention: **medieval** or **Renaissance perspectival**?

**Answer:**

- Medieval (hierarchical space): The Virgin dwarfs the donors kneeling beside her, Gold ground with no depth behind the figures, Size indicates spiritual importance
- Renaissance (perspectival space): Floor tiles compress by fixed ratio toward one point, Architecture recedes to a vanishing point at eye level, Distant figures painted smaller than near ones

**Why:** Two grammars of space: one where size means holiness, one where size means distance. Neither is naive, they answer different questions about what a picture is for.

### 6. Medieval contracts name a workshop; by 1550 Vasari is writing biographies of individual artists. What changed about the artist's status?

A. Guild rules were abolished, allowing artists to work independently
B. Patrons began paying more, which raised artists' social standing
C. The artist moved from craftsman to intellectual
D. Printing made artists' names widely known for the first time

**Answer:** C. The artist moved from craftsman to intellectual

**Why:** The liberal arts were intellectual and the mechanical arts manual, so demonstrating that painting required mathematics was an argument about the painter's rank. Alberti and Leonardo make it explicitly, and Vasari's *Lives* is that claim institutionalised as a genre.

### 7. Renaissance painters worked mainly to express their personal vision, free of external constraints.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** They ran workshops and filled contracts that specified size, deadline, subject, and pigment grade, sometimes the ultramarine by weight. Self-expression is a Romantic invention, projected backward onto men who were, professionally speaking, contractors.
