## Two Curves That Break

Two long-stable relationships broke after 1750.

The first shift is **demographic**. Pre-industrial populations grew very slowly. High birth rates were balanced by severe mortality crises. 

From the mid-eighteenth century, death rates fell while birth rates remained high. England grew at unprecedented speed:

The **demographic transition** model captures this pattern. Death rates fall first, birth rates drop later, and rapid growth fills the gap.

The second shift is **economic**. British industrial growth began around 1780. Key innovations emerged in cotton, iron, and steam. In **1830**, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened as the first modern intercity line.

Yet aggregate national growth was modest. **Crafts and Harley** showed GDP per head grew under one per cent yearly between 1780 and **1830**. The industrial transformation was concentrated in a few dynamic sectors rather than spread evenly.

## Explaining the Shift

Historians debate why Britain industrialised first:

- **Coal and colonies**: cheap energy and New World resources eased land constraints.
- **Factor prices**: high British wages and cheap coal made mechanisation profitable.
- **Useful knowledge**: the industrial Enlightenment linked practical artisans with scientific theory.
- **Institutions**: strong property rights and stable capital markets encouraged investment.

### Living Standards

The **standard of living debate** considers whether worker welfare improved. Real wage gains arrived late, mostly after 1820. Meanwhile, urban mortality and working hours worsened.

By the **1851** census, over 50 per cent of the population of England and Wales lived in towns.

> **Common pitfall:** assuming the Industrial Revolution brought sudden national acceleration. It was aggregate and slow, yet locally transformative.

**Why:** The model is a description, not an explanation, it says when growth happens without saying why mortality fell. That question is still open: nutrition, the retreat of plague, smallpox vaccination and changes in the age at marriage all contribute, and no single factor accounts for the size of the change.

**Why:** **1830.** What made it modern was not the track but the package: locomotives on both directions of a double line, scheduled passenger service, and a company carrying goods and people for profit.
