# Stress, Rhythm and Intelligibility

## Stress in English

**Word stress** in English is variable and contrastive. Misplacing stress can create a different word entirely, as with *REcord* and *reCORD*.

Stress combines duration, pitch, loudness, and full vowel quality. In English, **vowel quality** is typically the strongest cue.

Certain suffixes systematically **shift** stress and alter reduction patterns:
- *PHOtograph*
- *phoTOgraphy*
- *photoGRAPHic*

**Nuclear (sentence) stress** marks the most informative word in an intonation phrase. Moving this stress changes the intended meaning entirely:
- *I didn't say SHE stole the money* (someone else did)
- *I didn't SAY she stole the money* (I merely implied it)

## The Lingua Franca Core and Intelligibility

Jennifer Jenkins established the **Lingua Franca Core** by observing communication breakdowns between non-native speakers of English.

**Matters for intelligibility:**
- Most consonants and initial aspiration
- Consonant clusters, especially word-initial ones
- Vowel **length** contrasts
- **Nuclear stress** placement

**Does not matter much:**
- The dental **th** sounds
- Vowel **quality**, provided length contrasts remain clear
- Weak forms and connected speech processes
- Word stress and intonation contours

## Three Dimensions of Accent

Research by Munro and Derwing separates pronunciation into three distinct dimensions:

| Dimension | Question | Measured by |
|---|---|---|
| **Intelligibility** | How much was understood? | Transcription accuracy |
| **Comprehensibility** | How hard was it to follow? | Listener effort ratings |
| **Accentedness** | How different is the accent? | Listener accent ratings |

Crucially, **a strong accent can be entirely intelligible**.

> **Common pitfall:** This model does not dismiss pronunciation teaching. It shows which specific features actually prevent communication breakdowns.

## Practice questions

8 of this lesson's 13 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Speech is rated as heavily accented and transcribed with complete accuracy. Why is that not a contradiction on Munro and Derwing's framework?

A. Accentedness reflects subjective listener effort, whereas intelligibility measures purely acoustic properties
B. Intelligibility and accentedness are partly independent, so a strong accent need not impede understanding
C. High transcription accuracy indicates comprehensibility was preserved even if intelligibility was degraded
D. Accentedness depends entirely on nuclear stress placement, which does not influence transcription accuracy

**Answer:** B. Intelligibility and accentedness are partly independent, so a strong accent need not impede understanding

**Why:** That the dimensions are **partly independent**. Perfect transcription means intelligibility was complete; a high accent rating means the speech was audibly non-local. Both can be true at once, and separating them is what allows a learner to aim at being understood rather than at sounding native.

### 2. English word stress is contrastive: moving it can change one word into another.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True**, which is why English word stress has to be learned per word rather than derived from a rule. Languages with fixed stress — French on the final syllable, Czech on the first — cannot use it this way, since it is predictable and therefore carries no information.

### 3. Sort each feature by whether Jenkins's Lingua Franca Core finds it MATTERS for international intelligibility or NOT.

**Answer:**

- Matters: Preserving initial consonant clusters, Vowel length distinctions, Nuclear stress placement
- Does not matter much: Producing the two th sounds accurately, Weak forms and connected speech, Intonation contour direction

**Why:** The result inverts the traditional teaching order, which introduced the th sounds early and nuclear stress late. Note the scope: this is evidence about non-native speakers communicating with each other, and it re-prioritises a syllabus rather than shortening it.

### 4. Jenkins excludes word-level stress from the Lingua Franca Core yet includes nuclear stress. What explains this distinction for international communication?

A. Nuclear stress conveys pragmatic intent across utterances
B. Word stress errors are resolved through vowel length alone
C. Word stress never distinguishes lexical items in discourse
D. Nuclear stress is governed by regular suffixation patterns

**Answer:** A. Nuclear stress conveys pragmatic intent across utterances

**Why:** Conflating word and sentence stress overlooks communicative function; while lexical stress errors rarely block understanding in context, misplaced nuclear stress misdirects the listener's interpretation of the speaker's core focus and pragmatic meaning.

### 5. How many dimensions of listener judgement do Munro and Derwing separate?

**Answer:** 3

**Why:** **Three.** The separation matters because they are only partly correlated: speech can be fully intelligible, moderately effortful and strongly accented all at once, and treating those as one property produces both bad research and bad teaching.

### 6. Which are true of nuclear stress in English?

A. It falls on a fixed position in the phrase
B. Jenkins finds it matters for international intelligibility
C. It marks the most informative word in an intonation phrase
D. Moving it changes what the sentence is taken to assert

**Answer:** B. Jenkins finds it matters for international intelligibility; C. It marks the most informative word in an intonation phrase; D. Moving it changes what the sentence is taken to assert

**Why:** The fourth would make it uninformative. The whole force of nuclear stress is that it can fall anywhere in the phrase, and where it falls tells the listener what is being contrasted, which is exactly why the Lingua Franca Core finds it worth teaching.

### 7. Simplifying an initial consonant cluster by deleting a sound damages intelligibility more than by inserting a vowel.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True**, and the asymmetry is one of the Core's more actionable findings. An inserted vowel leaves every consonant present and merely restructures the syllables; a deletion removes a sound the listener needs. A learner who cannot yet produce a cluster is better served by adding than by dropping.

### 8. Arrange these pronunciation priorities in the order Jenkins's findings suggest for a learner aiming at international intelligibility.

**Answer:**

1. Initial consonant clusters without deletion
2. Aspiration of voiceless stops in stressed onsets
3. Vowel length distinctions
4. Nuclear stress placement
5. The two th sounds

**Why:** The ordering is deliberately provocative: the th sounds, traditionally among the first things taught to learners of English, come last on the evidence. The four items above them are all features whose absence caused measured breakdowns.
