## Why English Spelling Cannot Do This

A transcription records pronunciation, whereas spelling does not.

**This** writing system cannot be trusted. English maps roughly 40 phonemes onto over a thousand spellings.

* **Broad (phonemic)**: uses slant brackets to record phonemes.
* **Narrow (phonetic)**: uses square brackets to add allophonic detail.

## Syllable Structure

A syllable contains an obligatory **nucleus** (usually a vowel). It may also contain an optional **onset** before it and an optional **coda** after it.

English allows complex clusters:

* **Onset**: up to three consonants. The three-consonant shape must be /s/ plus a voiceless plosive plus an approximant (*scream*).
* **Coda**: up to four consonants (*sixths*).

## Connected Speech

**Words** in natural speech differ from isolated citation forms. Four main processes occur:

**Intrusive r** occurs naturally in non-rhotic accents. Speakers insert /r/ after specific vowels before another vowel. It is a standard phonological rule, not sloppiness.

> **Common pitfall:** transcribing from spelling rather than sound. Speak the word aloud and listen to the real pronunciation.

**Why:** Keeping assimilation and elision apart is worth the effort because they have different consequences for a listener: an assimilated sound is still there in altered form and remains recoverable, while an elided one is gone and has to be reconstructed from context.
