## Weight, Balance and Direction

Every rectangle carries a **structural skeleton**: its centre, its two axes, and its diagonals. Any element is read in relation to that skeleton.

Visual weight behaves like a lever. An element's pull depends on its **weight** and its **distance from the centre**:

**moment = weight x distance from the centre**

Balance occurs when moments on both sides match. A small accent far out can counter a large mass near the centre.

### What raises visual weight

- **Size**: larger elements are heavier.
- **Value contrast**: higher contrast against the ground adds weight.
- **Chroma**: more saturated colours pull harder.
- **Isolation**: an isolated element is heavier than one in a cluster.
- **Intrinsic interest**: faces and text draw more attention than blank space.
- **Position**: weight increases with distance from the centre.

Direction is separate from weight. Gazes, diagonals, and gestures lead the eye across the canvas.

### Canvas Formats and Proportions

French standard stretchers come in three proportion families for any given number:

Classical division lines guide composition placement across the canvas width. On a canvas 100 cm wide:
- The rule-of-thirds lines sit at 33.3 cm and 66.7 cm.
- The golden-section lines sit at 38.2 cm and 61.8 cm.

> **Common pitfall:** confusing balance with symmetry. A symmetrical arrangement has Balance, but an asymmetrical layout can too. Before moving a large shape, try placing a small, dark accent on the lighter side.

**Why:** Distance multiplies. An accent at the edge sits four or five times further out than the mass, so a fraction of its weight supplies the same moment, and the passage the student already likes is left alone. Shrinking the mass changes weight and distance together and usually costs the picture its subject.

**Answer:** Arnheim called the pattern of centre, axes and diagonals that a rectangle carries its structural **skeleton**. An element's pull on the balance is its weight multiplied by its distance from the **centre**. On a canvas 100 cm wide the rule-of-thirds verticals fall at 33.3 and **66.7** cm. The French stretcher family with the widest proportion for a given long side is the **marine** format.

**Why:** The third blank is worth computing rather than remembering. Dividing by hand is what shows how coarse the grid actually is at this size, and it sets up the comparison with the golden divisions that the questions below ask you to work out for yourself.

### 3. A canvas is 100 cm wide. How far from the left edge, in centimetres, does the golden-section division nearer that edge fall?

**Answer:** 38.2 (within ±0.6)

**Why:** **38.2 cm.** Dividing 100 by 1.618 gives 61.8, the larger part, so the nearer division sits at 100 minus 61.8. The two golden verticals are therefore at 38.2 and 61.8, straddling the centre almost as tightly as the thirds do.

### 4. Arrange these compositional decisions in the order they are actually settled.

**Answer:**

1. Choose the format and its proportion, before any paint
2. Decide the dominant mass and where it sits against the centre
3. Establish the value structure of the large shapes
4. Balance the remaining moments with smaller elements
5. Place the accents of highest chroma last, where they can do most work

**Why:** The order is a resource argument. Format cannot be changed, value structure can be changed only with difficulty, position of the dominant mass with effort, and the accents cost nothing to move. Spending the flexible decisions first is how students end up with nothing left to correct with.

### 5. On that same canvas 100 cm wide, by how many centimetres does the nearer rule-of-thirds vertical differ from the nearer golden-section division?

**Answer:** 4.9 (within ±1.2)

**Why:** About **4.9 cm**: 38.2 against 33.3. On a metre of canvas that is a visible distance and a trivial difference, which is the fair verdict on a very long dispute. Neither system was derived from the other and both land in the same region, so the choice between them is a preference, not a discovery.
