## The Half of the Picture the Viewer Paints

A canvas holds pigment, but a picture happens in the visual system. It groups, separates, completes, and corrects automatically. 

The Berlin school of Gestalt psychology described these regularities. Max Wertheimer's **1923** paper remains the classic reference for grouping laws.

### Figure and ground

Before grouping, the eye decides what is object and what is surround. Edgar Rubin introduced his famous vase-or-faces figure in **1915** to explore this.

A region reads as figure when it is:
- **smaller**
- **enclosed** by another region
- **convex**
- **meaningful**

### Constancy and Contrast

Lightness constancy is vital in painting. Take white paper with reflectance 0.85 and black paper with reflectance 0.05. 

In sunlight at 10,000 lux, the white reflects 8,500 units and the black reflects 500. Move the white paper into deep shade at 300 lux. It now sends 255 units to the eye. That is roughly **half** the light of the sunlit black paper. Yet the white paper still looks white.

The eye does not measure incoming light directly. It estimates the **surface** property by inferring scene illumination. 

In **1865**, Ernst Mach described a related edge phenomenon. The visual system exaggerates contrast at boundaries, creating **Mach bands**. These illusory bands can make smooth tonal transitions appear stepped.

> **Common pitfall:** treating perceptual principles as mere decoration. They operate automatically and decide whether an image reads correctly. Grouping will happen regardless of painterly intent.

### 1. Why does each region come forward as the figure rather than staying as ground? Sort by the cue that decides it.

**Answer:**

**Why:** The three cues can be set against each other, and Rubin's vase does exactly that: make the two regions equal in area, mutually enclosing and equally convex, and the reading flips back and forth because nothing decides it. A composition with an accidental tie of that kind is unstable in a way its painter usually cannot see any more.

### 2. A row of 12 evenly spaced dots has the gap after every third dot doubled. How many groups does proximity produce?

**Answer:** 4

**Why:** **Four.** Nothing changed about the dots, only the spaces between them, and yet the row is now four objects rather than twelve. That is the cheapest demonstration in the subject that grouping is contributed by the viewer, and the reason an accidental gap in a composition creates an object nobody painted.

**Why:** The fourth mistakes the surface for the organisation. A ground can carry far more paint than the figure it surrounds and remain the ground, because the decision is made on size, enclosure, convexity and meaning, none of which is a fact about how much pigment is present.

### 4. Arrange the stages of looking at a composition in the order the visual system carries them out.

**Answer:**

1. Separate the field into figure and ground
2. Group the figures with one another by proximity, similarity and continuation
3. Recognise what the groups depict
4. Read the relations between the groups
5. Interpret the whole against what is already known

**Why:** The order explains why a compositional fault cannot be argued away. If the first two stages deliver the wrong objects, everything above them is interpreting a picture the painter did not make, and no amount of subject matter or explanation reaches back down to correct it.

**Why:** **False**, and the reverse of the truth. If the eye reported the arriving light, a white paper in shade would look darker than a black paper in sun, which it does not. The visual system estimates the surface by discounting the illumination it infers from the whole scene.

**Why:** By a factor of **32**, with no change at all in what was seen. That gap between the measurement and the report is the whole of constancy, and it is the reason a painter can carry a white through a full range of values on one canvas and have every part of it read as the same wall.

### 8. Complete the vocabulary of perception.

**Answer:** Wertheimer set out the laws of grouping in **1923**. Edgar Rubin published his ambiguous vase figure in 1915 to demonstrate the **figure** and ground decision. The Gestalt tendency to adopt the simplest available organisation is called **Prägnanz**. The exaggerated light and dark edges the eye adds at a tonal boundary are **Mach** bands.

**Why:** The last blank is the one that changes studio practice. Mach bands are added by the eye at every tonal boundary, so a perfectly even gradient still shows ridges, and a painter who chases those ridges with more blending is repainting something that was never in the paint.
