# Contrast Control

Shadows sit on the **toe**. Their exposed crystals develop fully within the first few minutes.

Highlights sit on the **straight line and shoulder**. They continue gaining density as long as development continues.

**Extending development raises the highlights much more than the shadows**. Therefore, development controls contrast rather than overall density.

Exposure determines shadow placement. Development sets the highlight values.

## Reading and Fine-Tuning

* Empty shadows: under-exposure
* Blocked highlights: over-development
* Flat negative: under-development
* Dense throughout: over-exposure

High dilution produces a **compensating** effect. The developer exhausts locally in dense highlights, allowing shadow development to continue. For instance, developing for 10 minutes rather than standard times requires careful dilution.

> **Common pitfall:** using development to rescue exposure. Extending development does not recover empty shadows. It only increases highlight density and grain.

A lightly exposed shadow crystal is fully reduced within the first minutes and can gain nothing more; a heavily exposed highlight area has far more developable silver and goes on darkening. Development therefore stretches the top of the range and leaves the bottom where exposure put it.

### 2. A scene has a subject brightness range of nine stops. A normal print holds about seven. How many zones of contraction are needed?

**Answer:** 2

**Why:** **Two zones**, which is an N−2 development. The subject offers two stops more than the paper can accommodate, so the negative must be developed to a lower contrast index to squeeze them in. The alternative, printing on a very soft paper, is available and gives a flatter result in the mid-tones.

**Answer:**

- Contracted development, N−1 or N−2: White interior, window, Sunlit street, 9 stops

**Why:** The two extremes are the same operation in opposite directions, and the middle column is where most work sits. Note that a nine-stop street and a bright-windowed interior get the same treatment for the same reason: both offer more range than the paper can hold, whatever they look like.

### 4. Complete the account of contrast control.

**Answer:** The oldest instruction in black-and-white work is: expose for the shadows and develop for the **highlights**. A development shortened to squeeze a subject range by one zone is written as **N−1**. High dilution with minimal agitation gives a **compensating** effect, in which the developer exhausts locally in the highlights. A negative with detail everywhere that prints flat and grey has been **under**-developed.

**Why:** The last blank is the diagnosis students most often reverse. A flat negative with full detail is under-developed and prints perfectly well on a harder paper; a contrasty negative with empty shadows is under-exposed and cannot be printed at all. Detail present means exposure was adequate, whatever the contrast looks like.

### 6. Arrange the contrast-control decisions in the order they must be taken.

**Answer:**

1. Meter the scene and count the stops from the darkest important value to the lightest
2. Compare that count with the number of stops the paper can hold
3. Place the important shadow and set the exposure
4. Choose the development that will bring the highlight where it is wanted
5. Choose the paper grade that finishes the job at the printing stage

**Why:** Putting the paper grade last is deliberate. It is the only step that can be revisited after the fact, so anything the negative can be made to do should be done in the negative, a print rescued entirely by a grade 5 filter usually looks like one.

**Why:** The fourth is the price rather than the prize. Compensating development tends to make grain more evident and results harder to repeat, because it depends on local exhaustion, which depends in turn on exactly how much you agitated. What it buys is the highlight compression, and that is worth the trade often enough to be standard practice.
