# Form and Composition

## Organising the Frame

Composition arranges tones, shapes and lines inside a chosen boundary. It relies on conventions rather than strict physical laws.

### Gestalt Principles

Viewers naturally organise what they see using psychological mechanisms:

| Principle | Viewer Action |
|---|---|
| **Proximity** | Groups nearby elements |
| **Similarity** | Groups matching tones, shapes, or directions |
| **Closure** | Completes broken contours |
| **Continuity** | Follows interrupted lines |
| **Figure and ground** | Separates the main object from its background |

These principles exist in the viewer's mind. The photographer merely sets them up to be performed.

### Frame Divisions

John Thomas Smith introduced the **rule of thirds** in *Remarks on Rural Scenery* in **1797**. On a 36 mm wide frame, the vertical lines fall at 12 mm and 24 mm.

The **golden section** uses a ratio of **1.618**. On a 36 mm frame, its divisions lie at 13.75 mm and 22.25 mm. Jay Hambidge developed **dynamic symmetry** using diagonals, which yields very similar positions.

### Stability and Space

Centred subjects create stability, whereas off-centre elements produce visual tension.

**Negative space** refers to empty areas. It carries weight, dictates scale, and actively generates composition tension.

> **Common pitfall:** Treating the rule of thirds as a rigid law. It remains merely a practical guideline.

## Practice questions

8 of this lesson's 14 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Why does each of these arrangements settle the eye or unsettle it? Sort them into the two columns.

**Answer:**

- Reads as stable: A horizon placed exactly across the middle of the frame, A symmetrical arrangement about the vertical axis, A pyramid composition standing on a broad base
- Reads as unstable: The subject pressed hard into one corner, A strong diagonal running from corner to corner

**Why:** The two columns are tools rather than grades. A photograph of a funeral usually wants the left column and a photograph of a riot usually wants the right, and the frequent mistake is to reach for tension because it looks like effort, an unstable arrangement of an uninteresting subject is still an uninteresting picture.

### 2. The rule of thirds first appears in print in John Thomas Smith's Remarks on Rural Scenery of 1797.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True**, and the date matters. The rule is an eighteenth-century recommendation for dividing a landscape drawing into thirds of light and shade, adopted wholesale by photography forty years before photography existed to test it. Its authority is customary, not perceptual.

### 3. On a frame 36 millimetres wide, how far from the left edge does the left vertical of the rule-of-thirds grid fall, in millimetres?

**Answer:** 12 (within ±0.5)

**Why:** **12 mm.** The verticals fall at 12 and 24 millimetres, the horizontals at 8 and 16 on a 24 mm high frame, and the four intersections are the classic placements. The arithmetic is trivial and the point of doing it is to see how coarse the grid actually is at this scale.

### 4. Complete the vocabulary of composition.

**Answer:** The Gestalt principle by which the eye completes an interrupted contour is **closure**. The empty area that carries compositional weight is called **negative** space. The ratio of about 1.618 is the **golden** section. The geometry Jay Hambidge built from the diagonal of the frame is called **dynamic** symmetry.

**Why:** The second blank is the one worth arguing with. Negative space is not the part of the picture where nothing happens; it sets the scale of the subject and does all the work in the unstable arrangements, which is why cropping it away so often kills a photograph that seemed to have too much of it.

### 5. Arrange the stages of a compositional working method in the order a photographer usually settles them.

**Answer:**

1. Decide what the subject actually is
2. Find a viewpoint that separates it from its background
3. Settle where the four edges fall
4. Place the subject within those edges
5. Check the corners and the background for intrusions

**Why:** The final step is the one that separates a made photograph from a lucky one. Almost every ruined negative is ruined at an edge or in a corner, by something the photographer never looked at because they were looking at the subject the whole time.

### 6. On the same frame 36 millimetres wide, how far from the left edge does the nearer golden-section division fall, in millimetres?

**Answer:** 13.75 (within ±1.5)

**Why:** About **13.75 mm**. Dividing 36 by 1.618 gives 22.25, the larger part; measured from the left the nearer division therefore sits at 36 minus 22.25. It lands under two millimetres from the third, a gap the eye cannot see at this scale, which is the honest verdict on the whole dispute.

### 7. Gestalt principles are cognitive habits of the viewer rather than physical properties of a scene. What follows from this distinction for how a photographer builds an image?

A. The visual structure must reproduce strict optical laws
B. The composition prompts the mind to complete patterns
C. The frame relies on the subject actively grouping forms
D. The camera records the psychological mechanisms directly

**Answer:** B. The composition prompts the mind to complete patterns

**Why:** Gestalt principles operate entirely in perception, not on the sensor or in physical geometry. Confusing the viewer's psychological completion with camera recording or mathematical laws treats an interpretive mental process as an objective physical property.

### 8. Negative space is empty and therefore contributes nothing to the composition.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** **False.** Negative space sets the scale of the subject, carries visual weight against it, and is the actual material of every tense arrangement in the lesson. A figure pressed into a corner is unsettling *because* of the emptiness in front of it; remove that and the tension goes with it.
