# The Zone System and Previsualisation

## Eleven Zones

Ansel Adams and Fred Archer developed the Zone System around **1939 to 1940**. It connects subject brightness, negative density, and print tone.

The scale runs from Zone 0 to Zone X in Roman numerals. In this scale, **one zone is one stop**.

Detail is readable only from Zone III to Zone VII.

## Placing and Falling

This method requires two steps:

* **Placing.** A light meter assumes every reading is Zone V. To move a tone, adjust exposure. Placing a jacket on Zone III means giving two stops **less** exposure than metered. Placing is your creative choice.
* **Falling.** After placing one tone, other scene values fall into place naturally. If the jacket is on Zone III and a wall is four stops brighter, it lands on Zone VII. Falling is a fixed measurement.

You place **one** value and let the rest fall. Photographers usually place shadows first. Underexposed shadows lose detail permanently, whereas bright highlights can be controlled later during development.

> **Common pitfall:** treating the system as mere careful metering. It is about previsualising the final print and setting exposure to achieve it.

**Why:** The meter is not wrong, it is answering a different question. It reports the exposure that would make its target Zone V, and a white wall belongs on Zone VII or VIII. Opening two stops places it there. This is placing, and it is the first of the system's two moves.

### 2. A spot meter reads a dark jacket. To place that jacket on Zone III, how many stops less exposure than the meter indicates must you give?

**Answer:** 2

**Why:** **Two stops less.** The meter proposes Zone V; Zone III is two zones darker, and one zone is one stop. Note the direction, which trips everybody once: to make something darker in the print you give it *less* exposure, moving down the scale rather than up.

**Answer:** The zone system was worked out by Ansel Adams and Fred **Archer** around 1939. Zone V corresponds to a reflectance of **eighteen** per cent. Deciding where a value should sit and changing the exposure to put it there is called **placing**. Where every other value in the scene then lands is described as **falling**.

**Why:** The last two blanks carry the logic. You place one value, and everything else falls; there is exactly one degree of freedom in exposure, which is why the whole method is organised around choosing the right value to place rather than around measuring more of them.

### 4. Placing a value on a zone is a decision about exposure; where every other value then falls is decided by the subject.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True**, and the asymmetry is the system. Exposure has one degree of freedom, so one value is chosen and the rest are read. Everything else the zone system does — contraction, expansion, choosing a paper grade — is about managing where the fallen values landed.

1. Previsualise what the print should look like
2. Spot meter the important shadow
3. Place that shadow on a chosen zone by setting the exposure
4. Spot meter the important highlight
5. Read the zone the highlight has fallen on
6. Choose the development that will put the highlight where it is wanted

**Why:** Previsualisation comes first and is the step people skip, which turns the rest into arithmetic without a purpose. The last step is where the second degree of freedom enters: the exposure has already been fixed by the shadow, so only development can still move the highlight.

**Why:** The fourth is the habit the system replaces. Placing everything on Zone V is what an unthinking reflected reading already does, and it is correct only when the metered area really should be middle grey, which is why the method insists on choosing what to place before deciding where.

**Why:** **Zone VIII.** Three plus five is eight, and Zone VIII is white with the slightest texture, just inside what the paper can render. One more stop of subject range and the highlight would fall on Zone IX, blank white, and the development would have to be shortened to pull it back.

**Why:** **Four stops.** From III to VII is four intervals, and that is the range in which a viewer can actually see detail. A subject spanning seven stops therefore has three stops of information that must be pushed into the textureless ends or squeezed in by development, which is the whole business of contrast control.
