# Scientific Report Writing

## Anatomy of a Report

A scientific report communicates your experiment clearly so others can **evaluate** and **reproduce** your work. The **Discussion** section is the most important part because it proves you understand your data, not just that you collected it.

| Section | Purpose & Content |
| --- | --- |
| **Title & Abstract** | Concise description; 1-paragraph aim, method, result summary. |
| **Intro & Method** | Background theory, purpose, equipment, procedure, diagram. |
| **Results & Discussion** | Data tables, graphs, calculations, error analysis. |
| **Conclusion** | Findings with uncertainties (avoid vague "verified" claims). |

**Key distinction:** Never claim vague "human error." Name specific systematic or random sources instead.

## Data & Visuals

Proper formatting separates amateur reports from professional science. Every measured quantity must include its **uncertainty** and SI units.

| Element | Standard Rule |
| --- | --- |
| **Data Tables** | Header with units; value format like $2.34 \pm 0.02$ m. |
| **Figures & Graphs** | Numbered, captioned, and explicitly referenced in text. |
| **Error Bars** | Mandatory on all plotted data points. |

**Common mistakes:**
- Confusing **precision** (reproducibility) with **accuracy** (closeness to true value).
- Writing conclusions using adjectives instead of numbers: compare measured value $\pm$ uncertainty against accepted values using discrepancy in sigmas.

## Practice questions

8 of this lesson's 13 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Match each section of a scientific report to its content.

**Answer:**

- Introduction → Background theory and purpose of the experiment
- Methods → Equipment, procedure, and conditions
- Results → Data, tables, graphs, and calculated values
- Discussion → Interpretation of results, comparison with theory, error analysis

**Why:** A standard lab report follows the IMRaD structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.

### 2. Which should be included in the conclusion of a lab report?

A. The raw data tables
B. Suggestions for improving the experiment
C. A summary of the key numerical results with uncertainties
D. Whether the hypothesis was supported or refuted

**Answer:** B. Suggestions for improving the experiment; C. A summary of the key numerical results with uncertainties; D. Whether the hypothesis was supported or refuted

**Why:** The conclusion summarizes findings and suggests improvements; raw data belongs in the results section.

### 3. Complete the following passage by choosing the correct terms from the word bank.

**Answer:** When presenting a result, you should state the value, its **uncertainty**, and the correct number of **significant** figures.

**Why:** A properly reported result includes the measured value, its uncertainty, and appropriate significant figures.

### 4. Sort each item into the correct section of a lab report.

**Answer:**

- Results: Graph of voltage vs current, Table of measured resistances, Calculated slope of best-fit line
- Discussion: Percent error compared to accepted value, Sources of systematic error, Why the result differs from the theoretical prediction

**Why:** Results present data objectively; Discussion interprets and explains.

### 5. Assemble the standard structure of a physics lab report, top to bottom.

**Answer:**

1. Abstract, one paragraph: goal, method, headline result with uncertainty
2. Introduction & theory, the equation to be tested
3. Method, apparatus and procedure, reproducible by a peer
4. Results & analysis, data tables, plots, fits, propagated uncertainties
5. Discussion & conclusion, comparison with theory, error sources, verdict

**Why:** The report format is a communication protocol honed over centuries: a busy reader gets the verdict in the abstract, and a skeptical one can descend level by level all the way to raw data. Reproducibility, someone else repeating your method, is the standard the structure serves.

### 6. A scientific report must contain enough for another group to repeat the work. Why is that the standard rather than simply reporting the result?

A. Because journals require a fixed structure for consistency
B. Because a result nobody can check is not yet knowledge
C. Because methods sections establish priority over the discovery
D. Because the original group may need to repeat the work themselves

**Answer:** B. Because a result nobody can check is not yet knowledge

**Why:** Checkability is what makes it science rather than testimony. The method section is not documentation of the past, it is the instructions for the test that has not happened yet.

### 7. The abstract of a scientific report should be written last, after all other sections are complete.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** The abstract summarizes the entire report, so it is best written after all results and conclusions are finalized.

### 8. Complete the statement with the correct term.

**Answer:** The **methods** section of a lab report describes the experimental procedure in enough detail for another scientist to replicate it.

**Why:** The methods (or procedure) section enables reproducibility by detailing all steps, equipment, and conditions.
