# The Big Five Trait Model

## Five Dimensions, One Model

The **Big Five** (**OCEAN** or **CANOE**) is the most empirically supported trait model in psychology, converging across cultures on five broad dimensions. Each is a **continuous spectrum**, not a category, and your profile is your combination of scores on all five:

| Trait | High scorers | Low scorers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **O**penness | Curious, imaginative | Practical, routine |
| **C**onscientiousness | Organized, disciplined | Spontaneous, careless |
| **E**xtraversion | Sociable, energetic | Reserved, solitary |
| **A**greeableness | Cooperative, trusting | Competitive, blunt |
| **N**euroticism | Anxious, reactive | Calm, resilient |

$$\text{Personality} = f(O, C, E, A, N)$$

**Common pitfall:** Treating extraversion and introversion as a strict category. In the model, it is a **continuous dimension**, and most people fall in the middle.

## Stability and Validity

The Big Five shows strong **predictive validity**: conscientiousness predicts job and academic success, extraversion predicts leadership, and neuroticism predicts vulnerability to mood disorders.

Traits show substantial **adult stability**, meaning your relative standing persists over decades. However, absolute scores shift modestly with age: conscientiousness and agreeableness rise, while neuroticism declines.

Unlike earlier models, the Big Five has been replicated across diverse cultures and languages, capturing a fundamental structure of human personality variation rather than an English-language artifact.

## Practice questions

9 of this lesson's 12 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Conscientiousness predicts job and academic performance across many different settings.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** True. What it names — being organised, persistent and following through — is useful in almost any role, which is why it is the most consistent Big Five predictor of performance across occupations. Other traits predict well within particular roles and not outside them.

### 2. Extraversion is the Big Five trait that best predicts job performance across almost every occupation.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** False. Conscientiousness is. Extraversion predicts well in sales and management, where the work is social, and poorly elsewhere. The distinction matters for selection: a trait that predicts *in general* and one that predicts *in a role* are used quite differently.

### 3. Across cultures, people become more conscientious and agreeable and less neurotic between twenty and fifty. Why is such a consistent drift interesting?

A. Because it happens in the same direction almost everywhere
B. Because it means personality tests are invalid for anyone under fifty
C. Because it shows personality is entirely determined by biological maturation
D. Because it contradicts the finding that traits are stable over time

**Answer:** A. Because it happens in the same direction almost everywhere

**Why:** Cross-cultural consistency is what makes it more than social conditioning: the maturity principle shows up in societies with very different demands. And it coexists with rank stability, the whole cohort mellows while everyone keeps their relative position, exactly the pattern the Flynn effect shows for ability.

### 4. The Big Five were proposed by a theorist who argued personality should have five dimensions.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** False. They fell out of factor analysis of trait adjectives, repeatedly producing the same five groupings across languages and samples. Nobody chose five or which five, that is the model's main claim to objectivity, and also why the factors ended up with such awkward names.

### 5. People describe themselves as introverts or extraverts, as though these were two kinds of person. Trait theory insists extraversion is a dimension. Why does the distinction between a type and a dimension matter?

A. Because types are determined by upbringing and dimensions by genetics, so the terms imply different causes.
B. Because extraversion is the only Big Five trait that is continuous, the other four being genuinely categorical.
C. Because a dimension can change over a lifetime while a type cannot, and personality is known to be fixed.
D. Because the trait is distributed continuously, with no gap anywhere.

**Answer:** D. Because the trait is distributed continuously, with no gap anywhere.

**Why:** The empirical question is what the distribution looks like, and the answer is a single hump with no dip to mark a boundary. Dichotomising files the 51st and 95th percentiles together and separates two people either side of an arbitrary line who resemble each other more than anyone else, which is why a substantial share of MBTI takers get a different type weeks later.

### 6. Order the reasoning that 'introvert' is not a separate personality type.

**Answer:**

1. Extraversion is measured as a single continuous dimension
2. Most people score somewhere in the middle, not at an extreme
3. 'Introvert' simply means a relatively lower score on that dimension
4. So introversion and extraversion are poles of one trait, not two types

**Why:** Because extraversion is a continuous dimension with most people near the middle, 'introvert' just denotes a relatively lower score - so introversion and extraversion are two poles of one trait, not distinct types. Treating them as separate categories is the named pitfall.

### 7. Classify each described person by the Big Five trait they score HIGH on.

**Answer:**

- Extraversion → Outgoing, sociable, and energized by being around others
- Conscientiousness → Organized, disciplined, dependable, and punctual
- Neuroticism → Anxious, emotionally reactive, and easily upset
- Openness → Curious, imaginative, always eager to try new experiences

**Why:** Curiosity is openness, organization is conscientiousness, sociability is extraversion, and emotional reactivity is neuroticism. Each adjective cluster fingerprints one of the five dimensions (the fifth, agreeableness, is compassion/cooperation).

### 8. Sort each description by whether it reflects a HIGH or LOW scorer on the named trait.

**Answer:**

- High scorer: Conscientiousness: keeps a detailed planner and never misses a deadline
- Low scorer: Agreeableness: blunt, competitive, and skeptical of others, Neuroticism: calm, emotionally stable, and resilient under stress, Openness: conventional, practical, and prefers familiar routines

**Why:** Detailed planning is high conscientiousness and outgoing energy is high extraversion; bluntness is low agreeableness, calm stability is low neuroticism, and preferring routine is low openness. Each pole is read against its own trait's definition.

### 9. Extraversion and introversion are not two personality types. What are they?

A. Types in the Big Five but dimensions in other models
B. Two ends of one continuous dimension, most people mid-way
C. Descriptions of behaviour rather than of personality
D. Two separate dimensions that happen to be negatively correlated

**Answer:** B. Two ends of one continuous dimension, most people mid-way

**Why:** A dimension carries the information a dichotomy throws away. Splitting a continuous trait at the mean is a measured loss of statistical power as well as a conceptual error.
