## Building Hollow

Nearly all fired ceramic work is **hollow**. A solid mass cannot release steam and will break in the kiln.

**Coiling** imposes few limits on form. Build in stages to let lower walls firm up before adding weight.

**Slabbing** requires careful judgement of clay **stiffness**. Soft slabs slump, whereas dry slabs fail to bond.

**Throwing** is the fastest technique once mastered, but it only produces rotationally symmetric forms.

### Joining Clay

Every join in clay follows four steps:

1. **Score** both surfaces to increase contact area.
2. **Slip** both surfaces with liquid clay to fill gaps.
3. **Press and blend** across the seam so clay becomes continuous.
4. **Join at the same moisture level** to prevent differential shrinkage.

### Hollowing Solid Forms

A solid study can be **cut apart, hollowed and rejoined** at the leather-hard stage. Cut the form with a wire, scoop walls to an even thickness, then score and slip the halves back together.

> **Common pitfall:** Choosing a technique by what looks impressive rather than what the form requires. Form dictates technique, not the other way around.

**Why:** The sorting is by what the geometry **requires**, not by preference. A wheel cannot make an asymmetric form at all, and a coil can make anything given time, so the technique follows from the form, and choosing the technique first quietly decides what you are allowed to design.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** **False**: it is the **slowest to learn** and the fastest to use. Weeks of practice separate a beginner from a usable cylinder, and once past that a thrower produces in minutes what coiling takes hours to build. Both halves matter, and running them together loses the trade-off that decides when the technique is worth acquiring.

**Why:** About **two centimetres**, as a guide. The safe thickness depends on the body, the form and the firing schedule, so the number is a rule of thumb rather than a constant, and the more important requirement is that the thickness be **even**, since a single thick section is what cracks.
