## Why Work From Something

Modelling from a physical referent shows how a form is **constructed**. It forces three essential decisions:

* **First, the object has a back.** Sculpture must work from every angle. Rotate the piece constantly on a **banding wheel** to judge the whole silhouette.
* **Second, proportion is a set of relations, not a set of measurements.** Pick a key unit and relate all other parts to it. This prevents errors from cascading across the work.
* **Third, synthesis beats accumulation.** Capturing key relationships creates character. Adding fine detail to a weak structure only weakens the form further.

### Looking as a Technique

Two observational habits do most of the work:

* **Comparative measurement**: compare lengths with a tool and check angles against true horizontals or verticals.
* **Negative space**: focus on the empty gaps around the object. Gaps lack familiar biases, making errors obvious.

### The Dossier

The course requires **evidence gathered throughout** for a final dossier. Photograph each stage from fixed positions. You cannot reconstruct these structural decisions once the clay moves.

> **Common pitfall:** treating accuracy as the goal of modelling from a referent. Capturing structural organisation matters far more than dead, inert precision.
