## Beyond the Static Object

Contemporary three-dimensional practice routinely incorporates media beyond carving. Each addition brings distinct capacities and costs.

**Sound** travels past visual boundaries. In a group exhibition, it bleeds into neighbouring works, creating immediate curatorial challenges.

**Kinetic work** puts sculpture into real time. Motors running continuously throughout an exhibition require industrial-grade maintenance.

**Electronics and code** face severe obsolescence. Hardware and software decay rapidly. Conservation shifts towards **emulation and migration** rather than physical repair.

### Digital Fabrication

Digital tools fundamentally reshape **iteration and scale**.

- **3D scanning** captures physical objects or bodies as editable digital models.
- **CNC milling and 3D printing** output forms directly from digital models across diverse materials.
- **Parametric modelling** defines form through variables, letting artists generate related families of shapes.

Digital tools make testing variants and scaling rapid and cheap. What does **not** change is the physical reality: forms must still function structurally on site.

### The Cost of Interdisciplinarity

Adopting a new medium demands its technical standards. Sculptures using code become software artefacts that require long-term maintenance.
