# Scale and the Viewer's Body

## Size Against Scale

**Size** is a measurement in metres. **Scale** is a **relation** between the work, its surroundings, and the viewer's body. 

Two objects of identical size can operate at completely different scales. Size is a number, but scale is an artistic decision.

Sculpture is encountered by a body with height, reach, and walking speed. Four main bands define this encounter:

| **Confronted**: roughly body-sized | Encounter; reads as an equal |
| **Overwhelmed**: substantially larger | The viewer is diminished |
| **Entered**: large enough to occupy | The viewer is inside the work |

A form near your own height stops being an object. It reads as **another presence in the room**.

### Shifts of Scale

Altering familiar dimensions changes how we perceive an object:

* **Enlargement**: A colossal everyday object turns monumental and absurd. It reveals form that is normally overlooked.
* **Reduction**: Miniatures and maquettes let the viewer survey the whole, offering total command.

### Scale as Experience

**Richard Serra**'s steel works show that scale is an experience, not an image. Huge curved plates define passages you explore. 

The work is only truly available by **moving through it over time**. A single viewpoint cannot contain it. A photograph of a Serra reports the shape, not the experience.

More broadly, **scale is the property most damaged by reproduction**.

Photographs normalise every artwork to the dimensions of a screen. A miniature and a giant installation end up looking identical.

> **Common pitfall:** Assuming bigger works are inherently more serious. Scale is always a choice about the **relation to the viewer's body**. A tiny piece that demands intimate inspection is just as deliberate as a massive monument.

**Answer:** 1.7 (within ±0.4)

**Why:** Around **1.7 metres**: that is, adult height, which is the point of the answer. The threshold is not a property of the sculpture at all; it is the viewer's own body, which is why the same object reads differently to a child.

**Answer:** A measurement in metres is **size**, while a relation to the surroundings and to the viewer's body is **scale**. Enlarging a familiar object makes its **form** visible as such. The property of sculpture most damaged by photographic reproduction is **scale**.

**Why:** The last blank repeats the second on purpose. A photograph normalises everything to the size of the page, so a miniature and a work you can walk inside arrive identical, which means anything you know about sculpture from images, you know without its scale.

**Why:** **Four**: held, confronted, overwhelmed and entered. The bands matter less than the transitions between them, since that is where a work changes what it asks the viewer to do.

**Why:** The last item is the one that proves the distinction earns its place. A large work can read as intimate — through what it asks you to do, how close you must get, what it is set against — and no measurement of it would predict that.
