# The Structure of Three-Dimensional Form

## Four Elements

Three-dimensional form can be described with four terms.

| Element | What it is | What it does |

| **Plane** | Surface with negligible thickness | Divides space, defines direction |

Traditional sculpture is overwhelmingly a matter of **mass**. The twentieth century gave equal weight to the other three.

### The Hole

**Henry Moore** and **Barbara Hepworth** pierced their forms in the 1930s. **Moore** argued that a hole carries as much meaning as a solid mass.

Once a form is pierced:

- The **void acquires shape** deliberately.
- **Inside and outside connect** directly.
- **Space passes through** the sculpture.
- The **silhouette changes as you move** around it.

**Alexander Archipenko** substituted concaves for convexes earlier. A hollow could now represent a head. Absence of material actively represents presence.

### Plane, Line, and Base

**Constructed** sculpture works with planes and lines rather than masses. Welded steel works by **Anthony Caro** use planar relationships with almost no traditional volume. **Gabo** created transparent constructions that describe volume without occupying space.

The **pedestal** is the other structural problem. Traditionally, it isolates art from the everyday world. Two key moves challenged this:

- **Brancusi** integrated the base into the sculpture itself.
- **Caro** eliminated the plinth entirely in the 1960s.

Placing works directly on the ground changes everything. **The** sculpture enters the viewer's immediate physical space. Scale is measured against your own body.

> **Common pitfall:** treating the void as empty. In pierced sculpture, the void is a **shaped element** with equal compositional weight.
