## Order and Progress, or Conflict and Rupture

**Auguste Comte** founded positivism. His system rests on three main ideas.

The **law of three stages** states that societies and human knowledge evolve through three distinct phases:

* **theological**: phenomena are explained by divine wills or spirits.
* **metaphysical**: abstract forces and essences explain the world.
* **positive**: explanation relies solely on observed empirical laws.

His **hierarchy of sciences** ranks disciplines by increasing complexity, placing sociology at the top. Finally, Comte separated sociological inquiry into two branches: **social statics** examines social order and stability, whereas **social dynamics** studies historical change and progress.

**Karl Marx** proposed a rival materialist system driven by social division.

| | Comte | Marx |
|---|---|---|
| Engine of history | Ideas and scientific knowledge | Productive forces |
| Basic division | Specialised function | Class relations |
| Conflict | A pathology to manage | The driver of change |
| Method | Observation and comparison | Historical materialism |
| Politics | Rule by expert guidance | Revolution by the exploited |

Marx outlined his historical theory in the 1859 preface to *A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy*. Economic relations form the **base** of society. Upon this base arises a legal and political **superstructure**.

When productive forces outgrow existing relations, those relations become **fetters**. An era of revolution then begins.

Marx also developed the theory of **alienation** in the *Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts* of 1844. This work remained unpublished until **1932**:

* Workers are estranged from the objects they produce.
* Labour becomes an alien, coercive activity.
* Workers lose their creative human nature.
* Individuals are set in conflict against each other.

In *Capital*, Marx showed that capitalists buy **labour power**, the capacity to work. The unpaid margin workers generate beyond their subsistence is **surplus value**.

**Louis Althusser** argued that an epistemological break separated the early humanist Marx from the later scientific Marx.

> **Common pitfall:** reducing Marx to rigid economic determinism. Friedrich Engels clarified in an 1890 letter (when he was 88 years away from 1802) that the economy determines society only in the last instance. Political and cultural institutions react back upon the economic base.

## Practice questions

11 of this lesson's 15 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Comte placed sociology last in his hierarchy of the sciences, after mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry and biology. What does that ordering claim about the discipline?

A. It is the least rigorous science and cannot achieve genuinely positive knowledge
B. Its subject matter is the most specialised and of lesser foundational importance
C. It should only be studied by researchers with formal training in the other fields
D. It studies the most complex object and depends on findings of every prior science

**Answer:** D. It studies the most complex object and depends on findings of every prior science

**Why:** The ordering is a claim about dependence and complexity: you cannot explain a society without knowing something about the organisms in it, and biology already presupposes chemistry. Comte meant it as the highest possible compliment, sociology is the crown of the sciences because it comes last, not because it is a poor relation.

### 2. Complete the account of Comte’s system.

**Answer:** Comte held that knowledge passes through a theological stage, then a **metaphysical** stage, and finally a **positive** stage in which phenomena are explained by observed regularities. The study of what holds a society together he called social **statics**, and the study of how it changes social **dynamics**.

**Why:** The vocabulary is taken wholesale from physics, which is the whole programme in miniature: if society is lawful, the science that studies it should look like the sciences that study lawful things. Later sociologists kept the ambition and dropped almost all of Comte’s specific content.

### 3. Comte’s law of three stages holds that knowledge passes from the theological to the positive and only then to the metaphysical stage.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** **False.** The order is theological, metaphysical, positive. The metaphysical stage sits in the middle as a halfway house in which supernatural wills have been replaced by abstract forces but explanation by observed regularity has not yet arrived.

### 4. Arrange the steps of the 1859 preface’s account of how a mode of production is transformed.

**Answer:**

1. The productive forces develop within existing relations of production
2. Those relations, once suited to the forces, begin to obstruct them
3. The obstruction is experienced as a conflict between classes
4. An era of social revolution opens
5. New relations of production establish themselves and development resumes

**Why:** Notice what the sequence does not contain: any moment at which people simply decide the arrangement is unjust. Marx locates the trigger in a mismatch between what a society can produce and how it is organised to produce it, which is what makes the account materialist rather than moral.

### 5. Estimate how many years separate the first volume of Comte’s Cours de philosophie positive from the first volume of Marx’s Capital.

**Answer:** 37 (within ±5)

**Why:** **About 37 years.** Less than four decades separate the two great systematising projects of nineteenth-century social thought, and they overlap: Comte was still alive and publishing when Marx was writing in the British Museum. They are contemporaries, not successive generations.

### 6. In which year did Marx and Engels publish the Communist Manifesto?

**Answer:** 1848

**Why:** **1848**, weeks before revolution broke out in Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Milan. The coincidence is genuine and misleading: the pamphlet had almost no readership at the time and became famous decades later, so it did not cause the events it is remembered alongside.

### 7. Sort each element by whether Marx places it in the economic base or in the superstructure that rises on it.

**Answer:**

- Base: Who owns the machinery and the land, The technical level of the productive forces, The wage relation between employer and worker
- Superstructure: The law of property and inheritance, Religious doctrine about obedience and reward, The form of the state and its constitution

**Why:** The distinction is analytical, not a description of two separate places. Property law is superstructure and also constitutes ownership, which is base, a circularity critics have pressed hard. The most defensible version of the claim is about explanatory priority over the long run, not about which institution sits on top of which.

### 8. Marx’s writings on alienation were composed in 1844 but not published until 1932, so they played no part in how his work was read during the nineteenth century.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True**, and it reshaped the reception. Twentieth-century readings that put alienation and species-being at the centre are working from a text no nineteenth-century Marxist had seen, which is one reason the "humanist Marx" arrived as a discovery in the 1930s and 1960s rather than as a continuation.

### 9. Arrange these moments in the lives and works of Comte and Marx, earliest first.

**Answer:**

1. Comte becomes secretary to Saint-Simon
2. The first volume of the Cours de philosophie positive appears
3. The word sociologie is published
4. The Communist Manifesto appears
5. Comte dies
6. The first volume of Capital appears

**Why:** Laid out in order, the two careers interleave rather than succeed one another. Comte had finished his system before Marx had published anything of consequence, and Marx’s major economic work appeared a decade after Comte was dead, but neither engaged seriously with the other, and the discipline inherited both without their ever having argued.

### 10. Some readers take historical materialism to mean that legal, religious and political forms are simply effects of the economy with no force of their own. Why do most sociologists reject that reading?

A. Marx classified religion and law as parts of the economic base rather than the superstructure
B. Engels said the economy determines only in the last instance and other forms react back on it
C. The 1859 preface denies that productive forces develop apart from existing property relations
D. Marx abandoned base and superstructure in Capital's later volumes for a purely cultural model

**Answer:** B. Engels said the economy determines only in the last instance and other forms react back on it

**Why:** Engels conceded that he and Marx had stressed the economic side hard against opponents who denied it altogether, and that the stress had produced a caricature. The defensible claim is about explanatory weight over the long run, with real feedback from law, politics and belief, not a one-way mechanism.

### 11. For Comte, social conflict is a curable pathology, whereas for Marx, it is the fundamental driver of progress. What practical political consequence follows from this division?

A. Comte advocates spontaneous worker action, whilst Marx demands elite scientific guidance
B. Comte seeks expert technocratic management, whilst Marx urges revolutionary overthrow
C. Comte rejects all empirical social observation, whilst Marx abandons theoretical models
D. Comte insists on dissolving state power, whilst Marx seeks its permanent preservation

**Answer:** B. Comte seeks expert technocratic management, whilst Marx urges revolutionary overthrow

**Why:** Confusing Comte's scientific reformism with socialist transformation misses how their diagnostics shape their remedies. Viewing conflict as systemic contradiction leads Marx to revolutionary rupture, whereas diagnosing friction as functional disharmony directs positivism towards top-down administrative guidance.
