## A Science Invented to Explain a Rupture

Sociology emerged to explain a massive European upheaval. Three revolutions shaped it:

* **intellectual**: **Adam Smith** analysed the division of labour in *The Wealth of Nations*. **Rousseau** argued in *Discourse on the Origin of Inequality* that social structure causes inequality.
* **political**: The French Revolution destroyed the old legal order. Conservative critics like **Louis de Bonald** and **Joseph de Maistre** asked what could hold society together without tradition. This created sociology's core concern: the problem of order.
* **socio-economic**: Industrialisation transformed daily life, starting in Britain.

| Change | When | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanised textiles | 1760s–1800s | Moved work into factories |
| Steam power | 1780s–1830s | Concentrated industry in towns |
| Railways | 1830s–1850s | Accelerated transport and news |
| Urban majority | **1851 census** | Over 50% lived in towns |

Urbanisation was rapid. Manchester held roughly 75,000 people in 1801, rising past 300,000 by 1851. London expanded to six million by 1901. In 1845, **Friedrich Engels** documented this in *The Condition of the Working Class in England*.

The discipline soon gained a name. **Auguste Comte** coined *sociologie* in 1838. He switched after **Adolphe Quetelet** used his preferred term, *physique sociale*.

Two cautions apply. First, it was not purely European. **Ibn Khaldun** analysed group solidarity in 1377. Second, British industrial growth was gradual across England and Wales.

> **Common pitfall:** assuming sociology began as simple curiosity. Scholars always observed society. The new insight around 1800 was that society followed its own discoverable laws.

## Practice questions

11 of this lesson's 15 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Arrange these steps towards a science of society, earliest first.

**Answer:**

1. Montesquieu publishes De l’esprit des lois
2. Rousseau publishes the Discourse on the Origin of Inequality
3. Smith publishes The Wealth of Nations
4. The French Revolution begins
5. Comte puts the word sociologie into print
6. A census records an urban majority in England and Wales

**Why:** The order matters more than the dates: the intellectual claim that society is lawful comes first, the political rupture that made the claim urgent comes second, and the name for the new discipline arrives half a century after the rupture. Sociology is named long after the problem it exists to solve had been posed.

### 2. Conservative critics of the French Revolution such as Bonald and Maistre wanted to restore the authority the Revolution had destroyed. Why do historians of the discipline nevertheless credit them with handing sociology its founding question?

A. Their empirical surveys showed industrialisation fractured traditional family life
B. They proposed that social structures obey discoverable scientific laws like physics
C. They first systematically argued human institutions create social inequality, not nature
D. They asked what holds society together once tradition and religion lose authority

**Answer:** D. They asked what holds society together once tradition and religion lose authority

**Why:** They wanted the answer "put it back", and nobody in the new discipline accepted that. But the question, what binds a society whose inherited authorities have been demolished, was taken up whole, and Durkheim’s solidarity, Tönnies’s community and Parsons’s integration are all attempts at it. The politics and the problem separate cleanly.

### 3. Sociology emerged not from passive curiosity about human behaviour, but as an attempt to explain a structural rupture. What made nineteenth-century social observation fundamentally different from earlier philosophical reflection?

A. It rejected all theoretical models in favour of direct working-class study
B. It treated society as an autonomous system governed by discoverable laws
C. It focused exclusively on urban pathology rather than broader moral order
D. It assumed traditional authorities could easily restore social equilibrium

**Answer:** B. It treated society as an autonomous system governed by discoverable laws

**Why:** Pre-nineteenth-century thinkers reflected on ideal polities or human nature, whereas emerging sociologists conceptualised society as an objective entity operating under its own regularities, laying groundwork for systematic empirical analysis.

### 4. Comte first called his new science "social physics" and changed the name after Quetelet used the same phrase for a different project.

**Answer:** True

**Why:** **True.** Quetelet’s 1835 work on the "average man" claimed the phrase for a statistical enterprise Comte disliked, so Comte coined *sociologie* instead, a Latin-Greek hybrid he knew was ugly. The discipline’s name is a piece of terminological self-defence.

### 5. Sort each development by which of the three revolutions behind sociology it belongs to.

**Answer:**

- Intellectual revolution: Laws seen to vary, Social inequality
- Political revolution: Estates abolished, Rule needs consent
- Socio-economic revolution: Textiles in mills, Rail cuts haulage

**Why:** The three run together and reinforce one another, which is why separating them is a useful exercise rather than a pedantic one. The intellectual revolution supplied the assumption that society is lawful, the political revolution supplied the emergency, and the economic revolution supplied the raw material, a visibly new kind of society to describe.

### 6. Match each writer to the claim that entered sociology from their work.

**Answer:**

- Montesquieu → Laws and customs vary systematically, so they can be compared
- Adam Smith → Specialisation raises output and makes people dependent on one another
- Rousseau → Inequality is produced by society, not given by nature
- Bonald and Maistre → A society stripped of tradition faces a problem of order

**Why:** None of the four called himself a sociologist and two would have been appalled by the discipline. What they contributed was a set of premises, comparability, interdependence, the social production of inequality, the fragility of order, which together make a science of society thinkable.

### 7. Which claims about sociology’s origins are defensible on the evidence?

A. The discipline’s founding question was posed by critics of the French Revolution as much as by its supporters
B. Economic historians dispute how sudden British industrialisation actually was
C. Nobody had attempted to explain the rise and fall of societies before the eighteenth century
D. Systematic social analysis existed long before the word sociology, for instance in Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah of 1377

**Answer:** A. The discipline’s founding question was posed by critics of the French Revolution as much as by its supporters; B. Economic historians dispute how sudden British industrialisation actually was; D. Systematic social analysis existed long before the word sociology, for instance in Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah of 1377

**Why:** The first three are standard. The fourth is the story the discipline used to tell about itself, and it survives because it flatters: it makes 1838 a beginning rather than a naming. What changed around 1800 was institutional — chairs, journals, methods — not the sheer fact of thinking about society.

### 8. In which year did Auguste Comte first put the word "sociologie" into print, in his Cours de philosophie positive?

**Answer:** 1838

**Why:** **1838**, in the forty-seventh lesson. Worth holding loosely: the naming of a field and the beginning of its enquiries are different events, and everything Comte named had been going on for at least a century before he found a word for it.

### 9. Arrange the stages by which industrialisation reorganised where and how people lived.

**Answer:**

1. Power-driven machinery makes household production uncompetitive
2. Work relocates to sites where power and machinery are concentrated
3. Labour migrates from the countryside towards those sites
4. Towns grow far faster than their housing, water and sanitation
5. Mortality in the new districts becomes a public and political question

**Why:** The last step is what produced the first great wave of social investigation. Cholera, the sanitary reports and the factory inquiries generated statistics on a population nobody had previously counted, and much of early empirical sociology is built from evidence gathered by people trying to stop an epidemic.

### 10. Most nineteenth-century urban growth in Britain came from births in the towns themselves rather than from migration into them.

**Answer:** False

**Why:** **False.** Mortality in the crowded districts was high enough that several fast-growing towns had more deaths than births for stretches of the period; growth came overwhelmingly from rural in-migration. The industrial city was a demographic sink that grew anyway because the countryside kept feeding it.

### 11. Estimate how many years separate the publication of Smith’s The Wealth of Nations and the census that first recorded an urban majority in England and Wales.

**Answer:** 75 (within ±8)

**Why:** **About 75 years.** Three-quarters of a century is roughly one long lifetime, and that is the point worth feeling: a person born the year Smith described the pin factory could have lived to read that most of their compatriots no longer lived in villages. Sociology was invented by people who had watched this happen.
