## Three Answers, One Question

Sociology consolidated between the 1880s and the 1920s. Three thinkers asked how modern society stays bound together.

**Ferdinand Tönnies** proposed two types of social ties:
- **Gemeinschaft** (community): people share kinship, place and mutual understanding. Relations are ends in themselves.
- **Gesellschaft** (**Society**): people unite through contract, calculation and exchange. Relations are instrumental.

**Émile Durkheim** argued that modern social bonds change rather than disappear.
- **mechanical solidarity**: traditional ties where individuals are similar, bound by a strong collective conscience, backed by **repressive** law.
- **organic solidarity**: modern ties based on difference and mutual need, regulated by **restitutive** law.

In *The Rules of Sociological Method* (1895), Durkheim introduced the **social fact**. This is any way of acting external to the individual with coercive power.

**Max Weber** focused on social action, where individuals attach subjective meaning to their conduct.

Key concepts from Weber:
- **ideal type**: an analytical construct used as a conceptual yardstick.
- Three modes of **legitimate domination**: traditional, charismatic and legal-rational.
- **class, status and party**: three separate dimensions of social power.

| | Durkheim | Weber | Tönnies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit of explanation | The **social fact** | Meaningful individual action | Form of social bond |
| Method | Rules of **Sociological Method** | Interpretive understanding | Conceptual pairs |
| Key contrast | Solidarity types | Action types | Gemeinschaft / **Gesellschaft** |

In *The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of **Capitalism***, Weber explored how a **Protestant** ethos aided modern enterprise. He described modern rationalised life as a steel casing (*stahlhartes **Gehäuse***).

> **Common pitfall:** claiming Protestantism alone caused capitalism. Weber examined a disciplined spirit, noting commerce existed before the **Reformation**.

## Practice questions

10 of this lesson's 15 practice questions, with answers. The full set is in the app.

### 1. Durkheim defined a social fact by three properties. Which of the following are those properties, as set out in The Rules of Sociological Method?

A. It is general across the group, independently of its individual manifestations
B. It exists outside the individual consciousness
C. It exerts a coercive power over the individual
D. It is consciously chosen by a majority of the group’s members

**Answer:** A. It is general across the group, independently of its individual manifestations; B. It exists outside the individual consciousness; C. It exerts a coercive power over the individual

**Why:** Externality, constraint and generality are the three tests. The fourth would make social facts the sum of individual preferences, which is exactly the position Durkheim wrote the book to refuse: a language, a currency and a marriage law are none of them chosen by their users, and all three push back when ignored.

### 2. Complete the account of Tönnies’s pair of concepts.

**Answer:** Tönnies contrasted **Gemeinschaft**, where people are bound by kinship, place and shared understanding and the relationship is an end in itself, with **Gesellschaft**, where they are bound by contract and calculation and the relationship is a **means**. Behind the second lies the deliberate, instrumental form of willing he called **Kürwille**.

**Why:** The pair is a conceptual opposition rather than a historical claim, and Tönnies insisted both forms are present in every society. It is read as a story of loss because his contemporaries wanted one, and because the German word for community carried a warmth the sociological analysis never quite justified.

### 3. Durkheim held that a social fact must be explained by another social fact, while Weber held that sociology explains by reconstructing the meaning individuals attach to their action. What is genuinely at stake in that disagreement?

A. Whether modern industrial societies are integrated via kinship or formal legal contracts
B. Whether collective entities are causes in their own right or explanations run via individuals
C. Whether sociology should uncover universal social laws or trace modern capitalism's rise
D. Whether subjective religious beliefs have genuine historical influence over economic structures

**Answer:** B. Whether collective entities are causes in their own right or explanations run via individuals

**Why:** Durkheim's holism contrasts with Weber's methodological individualism regarding causal explanation. Other options conflate this with Tönnies's distinction, historical scope, or ideas in economic change, missing the core methodology.

### 4. Match each of Weber’s three types of legitimate domination to the ground on which obedience rests.

**Answer:**

- Traditional authority → The sanctity of arrangements that have always existed
- Charismatic authority → Devotion to the exceptional qualities of one person
- Legal-rational authority → Belief in enacted rules and in the office rather than the person

**Why:** The third is the one that scales, because obedience is owed to a position rather than to a man, and positions can be filled indefinitely. That is why Weber treated bureaucracy as the purest expression of it, and why he thought the charismatic type is inherently unstable: it must either dissolve or be routinised into one of the other two.

### 5. Arrange the steps of Durkheim’s argument from population growth to a new kind of social bond.

**Answer:**

1. Population grows and interaction between people intensifies
2. Competition for the same social functions becomes sharper
3. People specialise into distinct and complementary occupations
4. Individuals become unlike one another and dependent on one another
5. Law shifts from punishing offences to restoring broken arrangements

**Why:** The step most often skipped is the second. Durkheim is not saying specialisation happens because it is efficient; he is saying it is how a crowded society avoids destroying itself through competition, on an analogy with species dividing an ecological niche. The moral consequences follow from that pressure rather than from anyone’s intention.

### 6. In which year did Durkheim publish The Rules of Sociological Method?

**Answer:** 1895

**Why:** **1895.** The order of the three books is deliberate: a substantive study, then the method it implied, then a demonstration that the method works on the least social-looking act imaginable. Durkheim chose suicide precisely because everyone assumed it was purely individual.

### 7. Parsons translated Weber’s phrase stahlhartes Gehäuse as "iron cage", and later scholars have proposed "a shell as hard as steel" instead. Why do sociologists think the choice of words matters here?

A. A cage is imposed externally and can be unlocked; a shell is housing grown around an occupant.
B. A cage implies an external social fact forcing obedience; a shell suggests Gemeinschaft ties.
C. Weber meant a shell for religious asceticism alone, whereas a cage refers to secular capitalism.
D. A steel shell denotes bureaucratic legal authority, whereas an iron cage represents traditional rule.

**Answer:** A. A cage is imposed externally and can be unlocked; a shell is housing grown around an occupant.

**Why:** The two images assign responsibility differently. A cage invites the question of who built it and how to escape; a shell suggests a structure grown from the inside that cannot simply be stepped out of. Weber’s pessimism about rationalisation reads much more sharply on the second image, which is why the translation has been argued over for decades.

### 8. Estimate how many years separate the publication of Tönnies’s Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft from Max Weber’s death.

**Answer:** 33 (within ±4)

**Why:** **About 33 years.** The whole classical consolidation fits inside a single working life: a student who read Tönnies as a young man could have attended Weber’s funeral. That compression is worth remembering when the founders are presented as successive generations rather than as contemporaries who mostly ignored one another.

Page: https://tryals.app/practice/sociology-i/the-european-consolidation-durkheim-weber-and-tonnies/estimate-how-many-years-separate-the-publication-of-tonniess

### 9. Arrange these classical works by date of publication, earliest first.

**Answer:**

1. Tönnies, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft
2. Durkheim, The Division of Labour in Society
3. Durkheim, Suicide
4. Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism
5. Durkheim, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life
6. Weber, Economy and Society

**Why:** The last entry is the odd one: Weber died in 1920 and *Economy and Society* was assembled from his papers by his widow Marianne Weber, which is why its structure has been disputed ever since. A canon partly edited by an executor is a reminder that even the classics arrive shaped by other hands.

### 10. Durkheim argued that modern society does not destroy social cohesion but transforms its basis. What follows from this distinction when contrasting his view with Tönnies's account of Gesellschaft?

A. Instrumental calculation entirely replaces shared normative obligations
B. Specialisation creates interdependencies that sustain genuine moral ties
C. Modern legal systems must rely primarily on repressive communal sanctions
D. Traditional communal bonds persist unaltered beneath market relationships

**Answer:** B. Specialisation creates interdependencies that sustain genuine moral ties

**Why:** Tönnies viewed Gesellschaft as a shift toward purely instrumental, individualistic relations. Durkheim countered that differentiation in organic solidarity generates a new form of genuine moral cohesion through mutual reliance, rather than a mere loss of social solidarity.
