Practice question · Estimate
A grass plant is mown, removing the top of every leaf. Set the fraction of its growing capacity that is lost, from 0 (none) to 1 (all of it).
Estimate on a scale from None lost (0) to All lost (1).
Hints
- Where is the growing zone in a grass?
- Intercalary meristems sit at the BASE of the internodes, below the height of the cut.

Why
Essentially none is lost. Grasses grow from intercalary meristems at the base, below the mower blade, which is exactly why lawns tolerate mowing and grasslands tolerate grazing while most other plants do not.
