History I / The Roman Republic
Practice question · Put in order

Assemble the cursus honorum, the ladder of republican offices, bottom to top.

Hints
  1. The ladder runs from financial office upward to supreme command.
  2. Minimum ages and waiting periods governed each rung.
Show the answer
  1. Quaestor (finance)
  2. Aedile (games and public works)
  3. Praetor (courts and armies)
  4. Consul (the summit)
  5. Censor (the elder statesman’s capstone)
Why

Each rung had a minimum age and a waiting period, one more brake against any man rising too fast. Caesar’s generation treated the ladder as a formality; Pompey skipped most of it at the head of an army.
