Languages I / Transcription and Connected Speech
Practice question · True or false

Intrusive r results from speakers generalising the rule that /r/ is pronounced before a vowel.

Hints
  1. Compare far away with law and order.
  2. Both insert an r before a following vowel in a non-rhotic accent.
Show the answer

True

Why

True, and it is why condemning it is inconsistent: the same speakers accept the r in far away, which is produced by the identical rule. The only difference is whether the spelling happens to contain the letter, which the phonology has no access to.
