Law I / Resolving Disputes
Practice question · Put in order

Arrange these courts by the year they were established or began work.

Hints
  1. The oldest belongs to the United Nations system.
  2. The newest tries individuals rather than states.
Show the answer
  1. The International Court of Justice, 1945
  2. The Court of Justice of the European Communities, 1952
  3. The European Court of Human Rights, 1959
  4. The International Criminal Court, 2002
Why

The sequence tracks a widening of who can be brought before an international court. In 1945 only states could be parties; by 1959 an individual could complain about a state; by 2002 an individual could be tried by one. Each step required a treaty that a good many states declined to join.
