Law I / Sources of Law and the Legal Order
Practice question · Put in order

Arrange the stages by which a Spanish statute comes to bind, in order.

Hints
  1. Approval is not the last parliamentary step.
  2. Publication comes before the waiting period, not after it.
Show the answer
  1. The Cortes Generales approve the text
  2. The King sanctions and promulgates it
  3. It is published in full in the Boletín Oficial del Estado
  4. The vacatio legis runs its course
  5. The statute is in force and binds
Why

Students routinely collapse the last three. Publication is what makes the text knowable, the vacatio legis is the interval in which it can be learned, and only then does the norm bind. A statute approved in July and in force in January is neither a paradox nor unusual.
