Two point charges attract with a force of 8 N. One charge is then doubled and the separation is also doubled. What is the new force, in newtons?

  2. Doubling one charge multiplies the force by 2; doubling the distance divides it by 4.

Why

The force scales by 2/22=1/22/2^{2} = 1/2, giving 8×0.5=48 \times 0.5 = 4 N. The trap is to assume the two doublings cancel: they do not, because charge enters linearly while distance enters squared.
