Painting I / Context and the Conceptual Frame
Practice question · Sort into groups

Sort each item by which sense of "frame" it belongs to.

Groups: The physical frame · The institutional frame · The conceptual frame

Hints
  1. Two of the six are objects you could touch.
  2. Two of them are rooms full of people with authority.
Show the answer

The physical frame: Categorising gilt frame, Deep stretcher shadow

The institutional frame: Isolating gallery wall, First art school crit

The conceptual frame: The addressed debate, Artist reference set

Why

Only the third column is fully in the artist's hands, and that is the practical reason to keep the three apart. You cannot choose the gallery's wall colour or the crit's composition, but you can decide what argument the work is entering, and if you do not decide, someone else will decide it for you in a press release.
