Practice question · Numerical answer

On a frame 36 millimetres wide, how far from the left edge does the left vertical of the rule-of-thirds grid fall, in millimetres?

Hints
  1. Divide the width into three equal parts.
  2. The first division is one third of the way across.
Show the answer

12 (answers within ±0.5 count)

Why

12 mm. The verticals fall at 12 and 24 millimetres, the horizontals at 8 and 16 on a 24 mm high frame, and the four intersections are the classic placements. The arithmetic is trivial and the point of doing it is to see how coarse the grid actually is at this scale.
