Photography I / The Enlarger and the Print
Practice question · Match the pairs

Match each darkroom tool to its job.

  • Grain magnifier
  • Easel
  • Safelight
  • Timer
  • Focusing on the grain itself at the baseboard, wide open
  • Holding the paper flat and setting the borders
  • Making an exposure repeatable from one sheet to the next
  • Light of a colour the paper cannot see
Hints
  1. Two are about geometry and two about light and time.
  2. One of them exists so that a decision can be reproduced rather than remembered.
Show the answer

  • Easel Holding the paper flat and setting the borders
  • Safelight Light of a colour the paper cannot see
  • Timer Making an exposure repeatable from one sheet to the next
Why

The timer is the least glamorous and the most consequential. Everything in this lesson assumes exposures can be repeated to the second, and a printer counting under their breath cannot hold a third of a stop, which is exactly the increment the whole method is built on.
