  1. A battery is a voltage clamp; an open circuit is a charge trap.
  2. Whichever quantity is clamped, the others must adjust through Q=CVQ = CV as CC falls.

Battery stays connected: Voltage VV is held fixed, Charge flows back into the source

Battery disconnected: Charge QQ is held fixed, Field EE between plates is unchanged

Why

Connected: VV fixed, so Q=CVQ = CV falls and charge drains to the battery. Disconnected: QQ fixed, so V=Q/CV = Q/C rises and EE stays put. Identifying "what is held constant" is the key move in every capacitor puzzle.
