Practice question · True or false
When diluting a concentrated acid, you should add water to the acid.
Hints
- Where does the heat go?
- Acid into water, never the reverse.
Show the answer
False
Why
False. Always add acid to water. Dilution is strongly exothermic, and pouring water onto concentrated acid heats a small volume fast enough to boil and spit corrosive liquid out of the vessel. Adding acid to a larger volume of water spreads the same heat through enough thermal mass to absorb it.
