Why

The order contains the surprise: the body's response is complete before identification has occurred. Both routes leave the thalamus together, the subcortical one reaches the amygdala in roughly twelve milliseconds, and the cortical analysis takes several times longer. So the flinch is not a reaction to seeing a snake - it precedes seeing anything in particular.

That is why the last step feels the way it does. The relief on recognising a hose is the cortex overruling an alarm that has already fired, which is also why you cannot prevent the flinch by knowing intellectually that snakes are rare here. The low road does not consult your beliefs.

It is worth noting how the same architecture appears in anxiety disorders. If the fast pathway is tuned to react to a broader range of inputs, the sequence runs identically and the correction arrives to find the body already committed.
