Über diesen Kurs

Art History I teaches you to read works of art — what each medium can do and what an image means. Lessons are short and followed by practice questions with instant feedback, many of them asking you to identify, compare or interpret a work.

The first unit treats the arts as languages: architecture as structure and as something to read, sculpture, painting as a medium and a surface, design, photography and mass media, and new artistic languages. The second unit is iconography: themes, genres and hierarchy, the iconographic method and its critiques, attributes and identification, Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian sources and their survival, and images of death, transcendence, the body and the gaze.
