The Invisible Majority

Monuments survive, but the world around them mostly rots. Environmental archaeology recovers that vanished setting—forests, fields, floods, herds—from microscopic traces, reconstructing the landscape people actually inhabited.

Nature keeps records in durable materials called proxies:

Reading the Proxies

Pollen cores show landscape change. The unmistakable signature of early farming is the elm decline and rise of cereal and weed pollen: watching Neolithic forest clearance happen thousands of years before any text.

Zooarchaeology reads animal bones. Kill-off patterns (slaughter ages) distinguish meat herding (culling young males) from milk/wool herding (keeping females alive). Tooth eruption fixes the season of slaughter.

Pitfall: Proxies are indirect. Wind-pollinated trees flood pollen counts while crops hide. Bones face taphonomy (decay, scavengers, recovery bias). Always read through the filter that made the record, not around it.
