Off the Veranda
Until the 1910s, most anthropology was written from the veranda: scholars read questionnaires filled in by missionaries and colonial officers, then theorized from the armchair. Bronisław Malinowski broke the pattern. Stranded in the Pacific during the First World War, he spent nearly two years (1915–1918, in two long stays) in the Trobriand Islands — pitching his tent in the village, learning the language, and recording daily life as it happened. His slogan became the discipline's mission statement: to grasp the native's point of view, his relation to life, to realise his vision of his world.
Participant Observation
The core method is a deliberate contradiction: participate enough to understand from inside, observe enough to keep analytical distance. In practice it means:

Rapport is not friendship on a schedule — it grows slowly, unevenly, and can collapse in an afternoon. The payoff curve is S-shaped: months of small talk, then a threshold where doors open, then diminishing returns as the field becomes familiar.
Emic and Etic
Ethnographers distinguish two kinds of description. The emic account renders the insiders' own categories: the yam house is where a chief's power is visible. The etic account uses the analyst's cross-cultural categories: the yam house functions as a public store of surplus that legitimates rank. Good ethnography needs both — emic without etic is transcription; etic without emic is projection.
Ethics before access: modern fieldwork requires informed consent, protection of informants (anonymity where it matters), and honesty about the research role. Data obtained by deception is not a trophy; it is a violation — and it poisons the field for everyone who comes after.
