Greeks vs Romans

Greek architecture is post-and-lintel: columns hold up a stone beam. Stone is weak in tension, so lintels crack past a few meters, forcing Greek temples to be forests of columns.

The arch dissolves this limit. Wedge-shaped voussoirs transfer load sideways and down as compression, with the keystone locking the ring. Extend an arch into a barrel vault, cross two into a groin vault, or spin one into a dome.

Roman concrete (opus caementicium) made this unstoppable. Made of lime, volcanic ash (pozzolana), and aggregate, it was poured into forms by unskilled labor. The Pantheon's dome (~126 CE) spans 43 metres, unreinforced. Builders graded aggregate from basalt to light pumice and coffered the ceiling to shed weight.

Portraits and Propaganda

Roman portraiture inverted Greek ideals. Verism shows warts and sagging necks, where wrinkles are a resume of gravitas. Augustus countered this with political messaging:

Pitfall: Roman art is state media. The Column of Trajan is an unmatched historical source for Roman engineering and equipment, but it shows the victor's version of events. Read it for the logistics; distrust the numbers.
