Languages I / How Speech Is Produced
Practice question · Sort into groups

Sort each articulator by whether it is ACTIVE or PASSIVE.

Groups: Active · Passive

Hints
  1. One group moves and the other is moved towards.
  2. Everything on the roof of the mouth is passive.
Show the answer

Active: Tongue tip, Lower lip, Tongue body

Passive: Alveolar ridge, Hard palate, Upper teeth

Why

A place of articulation is a pairing of one from each column, the lower lip against the upper teeth is labiodental, the tongue tip against the alveolar ridge is alveolar. Naming only the passive member, as the standard labels do, works because the active member is nearly always predictable from it.
