Literature I / Ideology
Practice question · Multiple choice

Why does Althusser say art makes us SEE ideology rather than know it?

Hints
  1. He places art between ideology and science, belonging fully to neither.
  2. Knowledge in the strict sense means concepts; art gives perception instead.
Show the answer

D. Because it holds the ideology it comes from at an internal distance, without producing concepts

Why

Because art is neither ideology nor science on his account. It works from inside the ideology of its moment yet sets it at a distance, so we perceive it as a shape rather than inhabit it invisibly. That is why he thought a novel could reveal something its author could not have stated.
