Painting I / Analysing a Finished Work
Practice question · Estimate

A picture is described as high key because all its values lie between Munsell 6 and 9. How many Munsell steps wide is its value range?

Estimate on a scale from 0 steps (0) to 10 steps (10).

Hints
  1. Key is a range, not an average.
  2. Nine minus six.
Show the answer

3 (answers within ±0.6 count)

Why

Three steps. Key names where the range sits and how wide it is, not the mean value, which is why a high-key picture can still carry a single strong dark accent without ceasing to be high key. A picture with a range of nine steps has no key at all, only a full scale.
