Painting I / Research Methods for Artists
Practice question · Numerical answer

A material test compares three grounds against five binders, with two coats of each combination. How many test panels does that require?

Hints
  1. Multiply the two factors, then apply the coats.
  2. Three times five is fifteen.
Show the answer

30

Why

30 panels. The number is worth having before the morning starts, because thirty panels is a fortnight of drying and a large amount of labelling. Factorial designs multiply, and the commonest reason a promising test is abandoned is that nobody multiplied it out first.
