Practice question · Multiple choice
General cognitive ability predicts job performance across almost every occupation studied, better than interviews or personality. Why is this the most awkward finding in the field?
Hints
- Separate 'does it predict' from 'what should we do with it'. Which is the awkward half?
- Ask why a well-replicated predictor would generate more controversy than a weak one.
Show the answer
D. Because the same measure has a long history of misuse
Why
The predictive validity is not seriously disputed; what it licenses is. A measure that works, carries a eugenic history and shows contested group differences forces the distinction between an empirical claim and a policy, and collapsing the two is what makes this area so reliably badly argued.
