Psychology I / The Big Five Trait Model
Practice question · Multiple choice

Across cultures, people become more conscientious and agreeable and less neurotic between twenty and fifty. Why is such a consistent drift interesting?

Hints
  1. If the drift were cultural, what would you expect across very different societies?
  2. Stability of RANK and change in LEVEL can happen at once, the same distinction as IQ.
Show the answer

A. Because it happens in the same direction almost everywhere

Why

Cross-cultural consistency is what makes it more than social conditioning: the maturity principle shows up in societies with very different demands. And it coexists with rank stability, the whole cohort mellows while everyone keeps their relative position, exactly the pattern the Flynn effect shows for ability.
