Sculpture I / The Body, Space and Nature
Practice question · Put in order

Arrange these modes of the body in sculpture from the fullest presence to complete absence.

Hints
  1. The sequence runs by how much of the body is actually there.
  2. The mode with no body present at all is the last.
Show the answer
  1. The whole figure, complete
  2. The fragment standing for the whole
  3. The trace or cast, produced by contact
  4. The cast void where a body could have been
Why

The gradient is useful because the last two are not weaker versions of the first. A cast void contains no body and is entirely about one, which is a stronger claim about presence than a complete figure usually manages.
