Sociology I / Comte and Marx
Practice question · Put in order

Arrange these moments in the lives and works of Comte and Marx, earliest first.

Hints
  1. Comte’s career is entirely contained within the first half of the sequence.
  2. 1817, 1830, 1838, 1848, 1857 and 1867.
Show the answer
  1. Comte becomes secretary to Saint-Simon
  2. The first volume of the Cours de philosophie positive appears
  3. The word sociologie is published
  4. The Communist Manifesto appears
  5. Comte dies
  6. The first volume of Capital appears
Why

Laid out in order, the two careers interleave rather than succeed one another. Comte had finished his system before Marx had published anything of consequence, and Marx’s major economic work appeared a decade after Comte was dead, but neither engaged seriously with the other, and the discipline inherited both without their ever having argued.
