Sociology I / Globalisation
Practice question · Estimate

Estimate the percentage of the world’s population who were international migrants in 2020, on the United Nations estimate.

Estimate on a scale from 0 per cent (0) to 20 per cent (20).

Hints
  1. About 281 million people out of a world population approaching eight billion.
  2. It is below five per cent.
Show the answer

3.6 (answers within ±1.2 count)

Why

About 3.6 per cent. Surveys in European countries routinely find respondents estimating the migrant share of their own country at two or three times the true figure, and the global share is smaller still. The number is not an argument about policy; it is the baseline any such argument has to start from.
