The Transition Every Society Has Run
For most of human history, births were high and deaths were high, and the population barely moved. Then, society by society and starting in eighteenth-century Europe, something extraordinary happened — and it happened in a specific order that is the whole point.

The lag is everything. Deaths fall first — better food, clean water, sanitation, later medicine — and births keep going at the old rate for a generation or more, because fertility is governed by habits, norms, and economics that adjust far more slowly than mortality responds to a sewer. That gap between the curves is the population explosion. It is not a failure of anyone's self-control; it is the arithmetic of two curves moving at different speeds.
Every population boom in modern history is stage 2, and every stage 2 ends. This is worth stating plainly because the panic is so reliable: Europe's own explosion in the nineteenth century produced the same alarms about unstoppable multiplication now aimed elsewhere — and Europe finished its transition, as did Japan, then Korea, then Iran, whose fertility fell faster than any Western country's ever had. The pattern is a transition, not a trait.
Why Births Fall
Not mainly because of contraceptive technology — the technology usually arrives after the decline is under way, which is a fact fatal to a lot of confident theories. The real drivers are about the value of a child:
- Child mortality falls, so you no longer need six children to keep three.
- Children become expensive: schooling costs money and takes years, and child labour disappears from a modern economy.
- The economic direction reverses. On a farm a child adds hands; in a city a child consumes for eighteen years.
- Women's education and options, the single strongest correlate anywhere in the data.
- Old-age security stops depending on surviving sons.
Migration: Push, Pull, and the Two Things Everyone Forgets
The push–pull frame is standard — famine, war, and persecution push; wages, land, and safety pull. But it is incomplete in two ways that matter:
- Networks. People do not migrate to the best destination; they migrate to where someone they know already is. A single successful pioneer generates a chain, which is why migration flows are so lumpy — one Italian village to one Massachusetts town, over decades. The destination was not optimal, it was known.
- The middle move. The poorest rarely migrate the furthest, because leaving is expensive. Migration usually rises with development at first — as people can finally afford to go — which means development in a sending region tends to increase emigration before reducing it. Nearly every policy built on the opposite assumption has failed.
Migration is also overwhelmingly normal. The great named migrations get the attention, but most movement is short-range, circular, and repeated — seasonal labour, marriage, apprenticeship, return. The sedentary peasant who never left the village is largely a nineteenth-century fiction, and parish registers demolished it the moment anyone bothered to link the names.
