The Stage Has Opinions
Geography does not determine history — we will spend the last lesson of this unit dismantling that idea properly. But the stage is not neutral either. It makes some things cheap and other things ruinously expensive, and over centuries the difference in cost shows up as a difference in what happened.
The honest formulation: geography sets the price list, not the outcome. People choose; the landscape decides what the choices cost.
Water Is the Cheapest Thing in Pre-Modern History
Before railways, moving goods overland was catastrophically expensive. Rough figures for the Roman world: a cargo could cross the entire Mediterranean for roughly what it cost to cart it 100 km inland. That single ratio explains more about ancient settlement than any battle.
The consequences cascade:
- Cities cling to water. Coasts, navigable rivers, confluences. A city 200 km from water in a pre-industrial economy is a city that has to be very good at something else.
- Empires are shaped like their water. Rome is a ring around a sea — the Mediterranean was its highway, not its edge. Its landward frontiers were where the cheap transport stopped.
- Rivers unify; mountains fragment. A navigable river basin tends toward a single political unit, because the river makes the basin cheap to hold together. Broken terrain does the reverse, which is why fragmented Greece produced poleis and the Nile produced a state that lasted three thousand years.
The Nile is the cleanest case in history. It floods predictably, deposits fertile silt annually, flows north while the prevailing wind blows south — so you sail upstream and drift down. A single river valley, navigable both ways, agriculturally self-renewing, and walled by desert on both sides. Egypt's political continuity is not a mystery; it is a river with unusually good terms.
Soil Is Slow and Decisive

Soil constrains on a timescale nobody can perceive from inside a lifetime, which is exactly why it took the Annales school and their longue durée to make it visible as history at all. A tropical soil that will not hold nutrients for more than three seasons imposes a settlement pattern, which imposes a political ceiling — and no one involved ever experiences this as a decision.
The Landscape Also Moves
Geomorphology is the reminder that the stage is itself in motion, just slowly:
- Rivers change course, and cities die of it. Harbours silt up: Ephesus, Bruges, and Ostia are all inland now, and each was a great port that ended not through conquest but through sediment.
- Coastlines advance and retreat. Ancient shorelines sit kilometres from the modern sea, so "coastal" sites can be found in fields.
- Erosion is often our own doing. Deforestation strips slopes, sediment fills the valley, malaria arrives with the marsh. The classical Mediterranean did a great deal of this to itself.
The methodological point: you cannot read modern terrain back onto the past. The historian who looks at today's map and reasons about an ancient decision is analysing a stage that has since been rebuilt — and the actors were standing somewhere else.
