What Destroys a Silver Print
Three main threats destroy a silver print:
- residual thiosulfate from poor washing
- residual silver complexes from exhausted fixer
- atmospheric attack from ambient oxidants
Fixing Properly
Fixer removes unexposed halides. Exhausted baths leave insoluble complexes that cling to paper fibres and cause stains.
Two-bath fixing prevents this problem. Prints start in an older bath and finish in fresh chemistry. When the first bath exhausts, promote the second and mix a fresh replacement.
Washing and Clearing
Fibre paper traps chemicals deeply. Plain water needs an hour to wash it clean.
A hypo-clearing agent speeds up diffusion. It cuts wash times down to ten minutes and saves water.
ISO 18917 sets the testing standards and limits for residual chemistry.
Toning and Protection
Selenium toning converts metallic silver into stable silver selenide. This guards the emulsion against oxidants, deepens blacks, and extends display life.

Enclosures must pass the Photographic Activity Test to ensure they do not off-gas oxidants. Store prints in cool, dry conditions with 30% to 40% relative humidity.
Common pitfall: Believing longer washing fixes poor fixing. Water cannot dissolve complexed silver. Only fresh Fixer ensures permanence.
